Do travel trailers and equipment trailers have their own brakes? Is it based on the weight of the trailer?
Horse trailers have brakes on them and perhaps that is why hauling 5000 pounds with an F150 and stopping it doesn't worry me too much. I was just wondering though about other types of trailers.
It depends on the trailer. I've seen horse trailers with no brakes, just like I've seen light flat bed trailers with brakes. It all depends on the individual trailer, no one "type" of trailer does or doesn't have brakes. Okay, semi-trailers probably all have brakes, but that's probably the only exception.
Regards,
Ben
Trailer brakes and the spec regarding when they are required is usually mandated by individual states. I live in Texas and I believe any trailer over 2000 lbs must have brakes. The requirements can be found per state at www.trailerboats.com.
Like the other guy said, many states require brakes on 2,000 and up.
What ever the requirements, I would go with brakes on anything 2,000 and up just for safety and peace of mind. I would also recommend a good weight distributing hitch for trailers over say 4,000 or so.
The ride and handling and braking are so much better with good equipment, that you will be more relaxed while you drive. There will be less tension and if something bad does happen, the rig will handle far better.
Brakes on trailers are required based on weight of trailer. The weight depends on the state where you live. Exceptions are Wyoming and Kansas require you to be able to stop the trailer within 40 feet at 20 mph. Pennsylvania basis on the percentage of trailer weight to weight of towing vehicle. Oregon has no weight limit. Massachusetts weight limit is 10,000 lbs. Most other states are anywhere from 1000 lbs to 3000 lbs. Trailers over these weights require brakes. These are all unladen weights. Hope this helps.
