Had it put in a year ago and it just aint right. 87 V6 4X4 auto trans Ranger. It shifts from drive to overdrive and back constantly on the highway. even on a flat road of which there is not much here. All other autos I drive seem to stay in overdrive above 50 unless its gets to pulling hard. This is up and down or in and out all the time and it drives me nuts as well as sucks gas like an FE or my Y Block. Trans is reconditioned from a major suppler. Is there something that should have been adjusted or set up when installed? It was not a tranny shop that put it in. Just a general repair shop. Only mods besides dents and rust is the 31X10.5 tires. I am thinking hard of putting a 5 speed from an 89 parts truck I have in it unless we can get this working better. Any Ideas guys? And what trans is it? I now the C4,C6 and back cuz im old and old school hee hee. AOD? E4OD? Something else?
Its a A4LD, not the strongest tranny around either, Rangers are always much better with a manual.........seek out a Mazda 5spd from a donor Ranger, you will not regret it, you will find your truck really comes alive with a manual trans instead of the sloppy, slush box auto.
Thanks Dave. Like I said I have several donors one that is an 89 V6 with 5 speed. Is it the same engine and is it the right trans? All my standard trans donors have the shift towers missing. No junk yards here so where can i get that. Everything else should be there. And I still dont know if there is any adjustments that can be made to the auto trans i got to help it stay in high when on the highway.
Yeah, its the right combo for the swap. You may have to seek the shift towers elsewhere, check wreckers in Alaska and close mainland.
With 31x10.50s taking up a lot of HP to turn for the little 2.9, the down shifting may be normal for it to maintain speed.......You may not have a problem at all. I have 31x10.50s on my not quite "stock" 2.8 4x4 Ranger, with a bad headwind or towing a 1,100lbs boat, 5th gear is unusable much of the time. you may be experiencing the same type of thing trying to maintain hwy. speed.
