zf 542

anyone everhad bolt holes break on tail housing of zf 542 tranny can the tail piece just be repalced? was told easier just to swap trannys don't see way ..?

I would think a tailshaft housing would cost around $120.00 depending on if it is for a 4x2 or4x4 trans. I would have thought you would be lucky getting another trans for anywhere near that.

on the ZF you have to completely disassemble the ZF to swap the tail housing... Yes easier on a swap... Unless you can find a guy with the $500 in specialty tools to take it apart for you and put it back together after you swap the tail. The central case and bell houseing are one and have to be removed leaving all the gear and syncro innards exposed. then you have to remove the innards from the tail shaft (requires specialty tools) I don't know which tools it takes as I am one of the lucky ones to have a friend that is a Ford certified tranny mechanic...
