So I recently just upgraded from a 98 f150 4.2 to a 04 f250 6.0 and I've been lovin it but I was driving along today and my brakes and steering went real stiff and then a big pop and lots of black smoke came rolling out of the exhaust. I jumped out and put the 3" pipe back on the turbo just to get it home and the pipe came off twice more in a 50km drive...I searched around but I didn't have any luck, any help would be great.
You have hydroboost assist on the brakes. It uses power steering fluid to assist the brakes. Look for a leak or a problem w/ the power steering pump.
As far as the hose blowing off, the advice is the same as in a simialr post that is active also:
You need to know the boost - is it above 30 psig? If so, you probably have rust and/or carbon that is causing the varaiable geometry turbo vanes to stick. This will cause an overboost. Cleaning the turbo can be a fix if you do not gave excessive wear on the unison ring components. You can get a decent idea of the boost by putting a tee in the MAP sensor hose and running some hose (and the gauge) into the cab.
The boots can get oil soaked from the crankcase ventilation system (oil and gasses returned to the intake). If this happens, they really can not be properly clamped down. You will need new boots. It is always a good idea to clean the surface of the old boots real well (brake clean works well) if you are going to reuse them and also clean the tube that the boot clamps on to. Apply hair spray to the cleaned surface of the boot and then connect it. Personally, if the hose clamps are very old, I like to buy new ones. There is a torque value for the hose clamps. Be sure to tighten them to the torque spec.
Many folks have found it beneficial to re-route the ccv system.
Had the same problem with the boot right after the turbo blowing off. 04 f250 with 03 build engine. Boot was really in poor shape so replaced it ($85 from ford). Cleaned the coupling pipes and so far no more problems. Max boost around 28 but only at high speed. Normally full throttle accel give aroung 20-25. Engine is stock. Old boot was quite oiley and just could not be locked down. Damn expensive 4in piece of silicon hose though.
