I wouldnt say that is always true. I've seen plenty of the 4.6L 1997-03 trucks with the side exit factory exhaust, and the right rear center cap always turns green from the exaust. That is why the side exit before the tire makes me a little leary...However it is probably different on different rims.

They rerouted the exhaust and gave me a new rim because of what it did to it on my old 97 F-150. Truck was new at the time also.

If you are thinking of putting a new exhaust on I would just run it to the side but also behind the tire. Why run the risk of it doing something.
