Question EGR valve necessary?

just wondering if EGR is necessary? and how effecient it is? My truck is hesitating in fourth and fifth gear when i want to give it more gas and up hills and mountains. I have to take it easy and not just floor it. At idle it tends to skip a beat or two, you can hear it in the exhaust. Wondering if i can just eliminate it.

tried jumping the self test on OBD but got no flickering of lights, personally i think i'm doing it wrong.

thanks in advance for advice

Haha. Is it necessary? Depends on where you live. I have state inspections and if the truck came with EGR, then EGR better be up there when the inspector looks under the hood.

How efficient is it? I have no clue. Just google EGR deletes and you'll get plenty of results.

What makes you think your EGR valve is the problem? You do know EGR valve is meant to be closed at idle right? So if yours is functioning properly that skipped beat isn't being caused by the EGR valve.

i thinks its the egr because of reading others posts online and having the same symptoms. I was hoping that it would be the skipping of beat too....lol

Your problem is probably not the EGR, what year and motor do you have and what condition is it in.

My egr was bad and when I stepped on it I had no problems. The issue was at part throttle it would buck really badly. I unplugged the vacuum line from the egr and plugged it and truck runs great with no problems. You could try that and see if your problem goes away. I don't think it will but who knows maybe you'll get lucky.

I was thinking vacuum leak.

Remove all the vacuum connections you find at their respective components- EGR, vacuum reservoir, servo, etc. Anywhere you find a vac line on a component, remove it. Then, using either bolts of various sizes or vac line caps, plug all the vac lines.

Start the truck and allow it to get up to temp, then, one by one hook up the vac lines on their components. If you hook up a certain line and the truck starts the skipping, you've found your problem, and just need to test whether it's the line or the component that's bad.

It might not hurt to let the truck run for 30 seconds to a minute in between hooking up vac lines. This way you can be sure that part is good or bad.
