Straight pipe needed?

I am looking at putting a 40-60 horse tune on my 05 and was wondering if a straight pipe is needed? The cat and egr have been deleted. Im not against a straight pipe but Id prefer to keep somewhat moderate exhaust, with some sort of muffler. Is the stock muffler to restrictive? Would it work to just put a different one in its place? Or is a bigger pipe necessary? I only want to do this to run a tuner, not for the exhaust note. My plan is also to put a 6.4/6.7 stock exhaust tip if i can find one. I think those look freakin sweet! If its risky in terms of EGTs I will but if possible I like the stock sound.

Your exhaust should be just fine, lots of guys are tuned with stock exhaust.
Those tips shouldn't be too hard to find. Most guys think they are fugly and cut them off for a chrome tip.

I cannot stand seeing a diesel with a 4 inch exhaust and they have 6"-8" inch tip. But I gotta say, you may be alone with liking those newer stock tips . Lol!

40 HP tune isn't much in regards to having to worry about those EGT's. I just kept my stock 3.5" with my FICM tune. The only reason I finally decided to delete the kitty and muffler was cause I missed the "hiss", throaty sound, and the drone. I may be alone in liking the drone noise.

I think they look way better then stacks.

But if you decide to go with stacks, post some pics in the picture thread.

Short answer is yes, for us more stock dudes they make more sense. Much better than Bully Dog systems.

Something about how they don't increase cylinder head pressure like PCM tunes do. I am sure some of the other guys will chime in with more specifics.

I am very concerned when it comes too tuning, and it took a lot of input and personal experience from others, before I chose to eventually go with the FICM tune I have.

Ed at FICMrepair.com can also give excellent info about those PHP tunes they sell. Feel free to call him.

Thanks for the input. Are you Studded? I will be studded soon, but I dont need to go into the 11s on a quarter mile. I just want a little performance gain, I like the the fact they dont raise cylinder pressures. Did you send yours in? im just thinking about how to live without a truck while its being tuned. My ficm is a rebuild within the past month.

I am NOT studded, and I don't plan on being studded either. Unless my head gaskets eventually need to be replaced later on down the road.

The Atlas 40 PHP tune is the best bang for your buck IMO. What else can you spend $150.00 on and get the kind of power gains it puts out (besides the Atlas 80 and Hercules but I am not talking about those, cause those require additional mods like a larger exhaust and EGT gauge).

Here, read this: http://www.ficmrepair.com/pdf/PHPtuning.pdf

It has some great info and should answer a lot of your questions.

I sent my FICM to Ed @ FICMrepair.com, originally to get my FICM repaired and then decided to get the Atlas 40.

Turbo lag is gone now, I can smoke my tires as much as I want now (but i don't cause I have bills to pay instead of buying new tires), and the difference is huge in acceleration.

Depends on where you live. I'm from Washington St. So I think it took five days to get to Ed's, via UPS ground, but I sent it in during the holiday season in Dec. 2015.

If Ed gets it via UPS, then has his tech's service it the next day, cause they get UPS late (after the techs are gone for the day). Then they will tune it and send it back the same day usually.

He also has an exchange program, for a little more money, where he will send you a module so that that your not down, and then you send him yours to be tuned, then send his back.

FICMrepair.com @ 515-897-4459.

The biggest reason I'm suggesting the Atlas 40 to you is because it doesn't seem like your wanting to do a bunch of upgrades, and I think this is the best option IMO. And you will pleasantly surprised with the end result. So, I think.
I know I am!!!

Your input is greatly appreciated! My only thing is what about the atlas 80 tune? ill probably talk on the phone and figure it out but you are a fan of the 40 horse tune? Seems like a great option. Now i just gotta figure out how to live without my truck for a week!

Side note: 6.0s all day. My buddy just got off the phone saying his 04 duramax needed all new injection parts, fuel tank forward. 6,500 thousand total. Screw that! Rant over. We dont take handouts

Actually, I went back and forth between the Atlas 40 and 80. You need to get a bigger exhaust, an EGT gauge, and may need to get some new updated solenoids, I believe for the transmission for the gears 3,4, and 5. These were also the reasons that finally decided against it.

I plan on doing an EGT gauge, but I did not want to do a bigger exhaust or take a chance of compromising my 5r110 transmission. These are fantastic transmissions. I didn't want to screw that up, cause I knew I wasn't going to be messing it.

What's the status of your rig? Edit your signature. What else have you had done? Whats the entire history on the truck. Might be other things to consider as well. We like to be able to help with proactiveness. Why did you have your FICM worked on? Usually thereally "killed", not just go out.
