I let a friend borrow my truck for two weeks to work, because his F350 was totaled in an accident. I won't even go in to the 4000 miles he put on it in two weeks, pulling an 11,000 lb trailer with a bumper ball and no trailer brakes, the huge dent he smashed into and behind my tag trying to hook-up.
Before he brought it back, he thought he would be nice and have the oil changed. He took it to a Jiffy lube. Had it filled with 5w30 full syn, Pennzoil. That isn't my issue, other than it's always had 5w20 MC and a MC filter. My question is about the re-branded Fram filter they threw on there, what would you do?
Change both oil and filter? Change only the filter and top up the oil, or just leave it as is until the next change interval? I change it every 3 mos or so because it's rarely driven. Its an 03, when he took it, it had 11,800 miles on it, its now got over 15,000. I'm just saying I change more by date than mileage on that truck. BTW, the oil change only has about 100 miles on it.
This is why I will never borrow someone my truck. You leave it set for long periods of time so I would consider changing to a MC filter to get the better drain back valve. Being he pulled a trailer without brakes I would also check the brakes for any sign of overheating.
I'd say the oil is fine. The issue I would have with the filter is if it had the silicone antidrainback valve or not. You want that anti drainback valve working properly.
I'd put a MC 820S oil filter on top of level with Pennzoil Platinum and run it at least 6 months before an oil change. Honestly if I was putting only a couple thousand miles on a year I would use an inexpensive full synthetic and keep the oil in a full year.
Thanks for the input. They were out of MC filters 820s, so I bought a Purolator pure one. I think they make the MC anyway if I'm not mistaken. Keeping the oil in.
It was a gesture on his part but I don't trust Jiffy lube. He gave me the receipt and they charged him $84 to change the oil. All these other things they said they did, they didn't. On the sheet it states my brake and coolant levels were full. Not true, both are at minimum and have been for months. They said the air filter was good but there is no way they checked it. There is two year old dirt and dust on the housing and you could tell if anyone touched it, it wasn't. Makes me wonder if they even put synthetic oil in the thing they charged the guy $84 for.
The Pure One filter is fine as it is basically just a MC 820S filter painted a different color with a higher pleat count on the filtering media. I have used them before, I just have been using the 820S because its cheaper, has better avalability and is almost identical to the Pure One.
I don't blame you for not trusting Iffy Lube, I don't either. An oil change with an 820s filter and pennz plat cost me under $30 last time I bought it.
I think there was a difference of like $1.09 between the two filters, no biggie. The odd thing though, when I got the JL filter off (mileguard brand), which was gorilla torqued BTW, when I looked inside it, it looked identical to the Pure one. I was expecting to see no silicone drain valve, there was one. I was expecting to see a cardboard end plate, it was metal. I wonder if they have a new contractor making their filter. JL only charged $5 for it, so you know they had to pay like a buck or less for it.

NEVER,NEVER,NEVER Trust a quick, jiffy, true Lube doing any work on your truck! I have lost two vehicles due to lost oil plugs or cross threaded filters they are worse than a lunch crew at a Mc Donalds. They don't care how you want it their there to get you in sell some useless crap and get you out.

First off, I'd take the proper oil and filter...put it in a large bag and beat him over the head with it. Total lack of respect. The thread hits home thus my comment.
The one time I took my Expy to a Jiffy Lube years ago a swarm of trainee's engulfed it with the trainer barking out instructions. They got as far as opening up the hood and I ran in. Nothing was done and I said not today then drove off. The ones who work there are hacks enough.
Ahh.... the little details that get left out. $100 a day should take care of the new oil and filter and not worry about it.
The money wasn't relevant to the oil and filter issue. As it is, I only changed the filter and left the oil in. I only hope it is what it is supposed to be, Pennzoil full syn platinum.
Had he called and asked me, I would not have allowed him to take it anywhere for an oil change. I would have done as usual and done it myself. That is how he takes care of his Trucks, takes them to whatever oil change place is close at the time. He thought he was doing the right thing and taking care of it for me. I can't fault his attempt, only his choice.
Yeah, if it was my dd or something I wouldn't have loaned/rented it out. I have an F350 with a 7.3 that I drive a lot more. Simply because it has 4 doors, leather interior, auto trans and is a nice ride. I have 5 kids, Kind of hard to stuff everyone into a regular cab with a stick. None the less, I don't like seeing it beat up and abused with crap filters and oil. I love that truck, I just don't have the opportunity to drive it very often. It's down to the occasional Saturday now.
Nothing wrong with Pennzoil. I wouldn't pick it, but I wouldn't drain it either. I also would not drain 3 month old oil just because it was 3 months old. That's the oil company's biggest lie. 15 year old shelf oil is fine. Do you use the truck for 1 mile aday where it doesn't heat up? Because two miles and the oil is hot enough to burn out moisture. The oil out of the ground is millions of years old. Synthetic won't break down for longer than we will all be here. Age means nothing on most oil, its how it's used or stored. The three month deal was to get the compact car, local shopper, to change it before it sludged from compression byproducts. Not a sitting still rarley used garage queen. See if classic car guys change every three months, and their cars are much older.
