Okay so I've had this truck for a while, and I've been poking around since replacing the air filter, and it was FILTHY. So much so that I was a lil concerned, as I've replaced them on all kinda of vehicles before and never seen that much crap on a used filter before.
So I followed the air intake, and it seems wrong... Granted I haven't poked around inside of another 7.3L idi, but the hose seems to be pretty cheap, and very home made.
Then I followed it, and it's been shredded from the belts.
And finally it opens, into.... the frame...
I just want to know if I'm crazy thinking something is wrong with this, because the radiator is right there, and it gets HOT, shouldn't cold air be going into the engine for best performance?
yes that looks like dryer venting. my '87 goes down between motor and frame to get cool air under radiator, but does seem like it would pick up water if you were in deep enough water.
it just flattens out and sits over the battery.if you can run it the way it is again its actually allowing it to breathe better.
Really? Even being so close to the radiator? I mean I leaned on that thing once for just a second, and jumped it was so hot, wouldn't it be better to like run it somewhere that there is an opening, away from the radiator?
I know for gas you want cold air, I'm new to diesel, is it less of a concern, and just the more air is better then?
you want more air in and more air out with a diesel.i am planning on doing a setup with running a hose from the intake to the side of the radiator and cutting some metal to make it so more air will go in and last weekend i cut all but about 1 1/2 feet of my factory exhaust from the crossover pipe off and welded 5" on.anything you do that involves more air you will see improvements on power and mileage typically.but if you dont have a turbo that exhaust will be really loud if you take the muffler out.
So the "ram air" mod isn't bad, it's just poorly executed?
Because I have no problem having a hose that goes down under the radiator like the guys 87, or finding somewhere to stick it, which is NOT right next to the radiator....
This truck wont see deep water or rough 4x4'n (aside from a few roads leading to campsites).
I'm gonna save up and buy a cheap F150 with a I6 in it, and play around with that thing.
That's a cool mod, I'm going to have to take my front end apart a bit to see if I can run it like that, only concern being the size of my radiator.
So random question, is it normal that my truck 90% of the time blows no blue/grey/black exhaust on cold start?
It's rigged with a press button to warm the glow plugs, I hold it for 10-12 on an average bc morning of about 62F, little more on the cold ones. Just every diesel video I've seen blows something. It's currently at 363,000 km, with a rebuild at 200,000km.
Any info would be appreciated.
