Batteries

I'm seeing a color change in the little window on one battery. These are the original batteries in this vehicle from what I can tell.

Any recommendations on sizes or brands?

I have seen where someone traded up from 750's to 850's.

I haven't been having issues, just noticed the window.

And yes I will be replacing both if need be.

Thanks

Sean

If you have an Advance Auto Parts near you can get there 3 year free replacement for about $85 each before taxes buy buying it online and store pickup. Use coupon code K220 for a 20% discount on a order. You could get 2 Red Top Optima's for about $272 with the discount. That's my local pricing here in NC.

I replaced mine with 2-850's Titanium or Platinum- top of the line for them- from Advance Auto last summer. IIRC they were around $95 ea with 3 yr unlimited warranty. I got them there in case I was out of town, theres usually one you can find somewhere close by.

Red Optimas - 750CCA

I've had red Optimas in my X for a little over 5 years and they are still going strong. I have a yellow Optima that I bought for my '94 T-bird SC in 2003 and after I sold the SC I put in my Bri-Mar dump trailer. Still going strong. I've had a red Optima in my ZO6 for 4 years and it has been totally discharged twice. Charged it back up and still going strong.

Optimas cost more, however, IMO, they are more reliable in both extreme hot and cold weather, are more durable in high vibration environments plus there is no acid weep like you get out of lead/acid batteries to corrode metal parts.

The only thing I do not have Optimas in is my Scarab. I've had dual Walmart marine batteries in it since 2004 but they are showing signs of getting weak. The last two years I have had to recharge them longer. I have only 130 hours on the Scarab so they have not been used that much. I will say I have had very good service out of them. Never left me or failed to start the engine or run accessories.

Agreed Optimas are the better choice. I just could never bring myself to pay the extra before. Maybe now I would splurge as things are looking up. That, and now I would only need one, lol!

Thanks for the input.

Load tested both, replaced both. Not the Optimas' though. Where I bought the new ones had Optimas' on the shelf, didn't feel I needed to spend the extra dough. Funny thing, either did the salesman.

The tests didn't show the batteries were terribly bad, they just weren't good. The guy at the shop said, if I wanted to do preventative, replace them. Or I could just wait till the passenger side went replace then. (passenger side load tested the worst)

I chose preventative.

One thing on Dual Batteries. I had a '95 PSD and it was starting good no need to check batteries. Left from work one day after waiting on the glow plugs, hit the starter and everything went blank. Had a friend with another PSD try to jump me and nothing. Checked the voltage and both batteries were dead. I have heard that when one battery shorts it will cause the other one to go with it. Mine '03 justed turned 7 years old and I decided to replace while I was ahead. I got the Advance Gold Batteries with a $50 coupon on one and a $30 off on the other. The 20% off ends on July 5th so if you think you might need new batteries , this would be a good time to buy.

That's the main reason I bought new ones. After reading so much info on this forum, preventative is best.

I tried to explain to the guy why I chose preventative, a blank look came across His face when I told Him about the FICM. Didn't go any further.

heres the thing on the battery eye. that stupid little eye is just for shelf life. once the battery has been installed the eye is no longer any use. there tends to be a small amout of acid splashed on the eye wich make it no longer function correctly.

on the Optimas' I pulled one out of a customers car that burned down befor it went to total. cleaned the balck stuff off of it and charged it. it sat on the floor for 3 years in my garage befor it went in to a car. it was in the car for 3 years after that. Not to bad... I would by another one.
When I have to by a set Im thinking blue tops for the truck.

they're constructed like the optimas but in the correct group 65 size for our trucks, I've only had them about 9 months but so far they are working good
