How do you test a Mechanical Fuel Pump? Is there a way to assure its working. I have no fuel coming to the carb line.....and the bowl is empty......I just rebuilt it and stuck it back on.
Disconnect the fuel line to the carb and hook a spare piece of rubber line to it and point the rubber line into a bucket. Crank the engine and you should have strong pulses of fuel going into the bucket.
Also, if you have a vacuum gage, you can connect it to the pump inlet and it should show a vacuum pretty quickly when you crank the engine. If not, you might have the pump installed incorrectly or your re-build didn't come out quite right? Or any leak in the pump inlet plumbing could be enough to keep it from pumping fuel. And of course the obvious thing is to be sure that you have gas in the tank to pump, but that variable would be eliminated if you did the test the previous poster suggested. The last thing would be to ask what happened to cause you to do the rebuild? Is there any chance that the outlet from the tank is clogged, and the pump wasn't the problem after all? Have fun! Steve
There has always been fuel flow........The carb rebuild was a bad power valve ......and 18yrs of it never having been done before....I stopped working on it last night when it was dark(apt dweller)....and I will check to see if its out of gas....it shouldnt be based on how much its been drivin....float works for half of the tank.....so I have a big What if there. Keep you posted.....

I have another problem......the accelerator pump valve....seems to not work and I took the carb off twice to check it out.....right after start up the pump doesnt want to pump...and causes stall when I get on it......I took it off a third time and used air to blow around the check ball.....maybe that will work......now no gas..
After hooking everything up.....(and a gallon of gas), I found that breaking loose the accelerator pump BB with compressed air helped.......It must have just been stuck from the cleaning and I never bothered to notice. Working great right now......
