Wanted to post again beacuse no one has replied, 74 F100 390 automatic, my transmission is leaking around the shifter rod that exits the transmission out of the side of transmission right above the pan, i am pretty sure this rod will need to be disconnected within the transmission and pulled out to replace the seal or Oring which ever it is, i am not sure what is involved with the disconnecting of rod, whether is is something simple or you have to drop the vavle body. Any help would greatly be appreciated.
You don't say if you have a c/6 or fmx transmission , probably a c/6 .I think the c/6 is like the c/4, but i'm not sure. I just replaced the O-ring in a c/4 from the outside buy removing the nut and kick down lever, not to hard to do . There may be another one inside that you have to remove more to get too, I just know it stopped leaking on mine.
You have to remove the pan & valve body to get at the big nut that holds the shift lever inside the trans. The O ring is for the kick down lever and it is replaced from the out side, might be worth a shot to try it first before tearing into the trans for the shifter seal.
I will try the Oring first, if i have to remove the nut for the other seal, when i drop the valve body what do i need to be careful not to do, seems like i remeber some silver ***** within this body, not sure if they go where ever when this is removed or if they stay in place as long as i am careful. Thank you.
Here is an exploded diagram for the C6 from the Ford parts book.
The seal is basic # 7B498, the o-ring for the inner/outter shaft is #77265
