72'429 timing chain cover
I have a 429 out of a 72' LTD I am putting it my 71' f100 4x4 .This engine is missing the timing chain cover. I have been told there are 2 types of covers ....one with dipstick tube and one without.Which one is the correct one to use on my application? Thanks

well it is quite simple. If you have the oil dip stick in the oil pan you get the one without the dip stick hole in the timing cover. But chances are since you have a 72 429 you will need the dip stick in the timing cover. Also a good idea is to skip on the used timing covers and go with a new one. They are a little more exspensive but in the long run you will be beter off. Older ones are already corroded and you unsure of how much longer the casting will stay together. Just my thought.

You can use either cover. The cover with the dipstick in it is for a front-sump oil pan you can just cap this off. Since you are installing it in a 4x4 you will need a rear-sump oil pan and it will have the dipstick in the pan itself.
Don't forget to buy a rear sump for the oil pump itself.

I got a new one for my '69 460 here. Real nice guys. Give them a call. The cover is universal with plugs included for the dip stick and fuel pump.

I was going to tell you ERW in FL has a descent deal on it. Costs the same as the one posted above and you will find it on ebay also. Plus it comes with the nwer style crank seal you can remove without taking the cover off. Just look for anything that is for sale by FoMoCoKid or Mad Dogg Racing. His name is Anthoney. So far I have saved a ton of money over Summit. Not trying to plug them just a fact. Or you can email me and I will send you there phone #.
