b) something wrong with ECU wires?[/quote] welcome, wenter.
May be an ECU fault, but check that pin 10 hasn't been damaged/pushed out from the hairbrush connector on the ECU.
Also check your crank sensor wiring.
Thank you.
Whoever did the rebuilt - messed up the timing on RH. Today I finished removing the front engine cover and got access to the timing chains. LH timing was ok, RH was set up wrong.
Will need to get new timing cover and valve cover gaskets and will be ready to go puting engine back together.
A friend of mine helped me and we removed both timing chains. We set up everything as is described in the manual. Checked compression again - all numbers are different
Thought that since timing chain tensioner depends on oil pressure I have put front and valve covers on and added more oil to engine.
As I was cranking engine had started for a second or two and died again. I drained my battery in attempts to start it again. No luck.
Checked for error codes in the PCM - none.
I'm planning to check compression again on Monday. Hopefully it will be better than before.
One more thing: my spark plugs are black (like covered with ash). As far as I know it means that not enough air is in the mixture.
I do not know what is wrong with this car ( Beginning to think about replacing the complete engine. Think that guy who rebuilt the motor messed something really bad.
This may or may not help you, but I wanted to throw it out there for you in case it would. Besides, it's a fairly easy thing to check/replace compared to everything else you have done!
My 2001 had problems running awhile back. It would turn over to start but, if you tried to let it idle, it would die. Turns out it needed the IAC (Idle Air Intake Control) valve cleaned out. We cleaned mine out at least twice and it would last almost a year before it needed to be done again. Eventually we bought one and just replaced it. Haven't had the problem since. It's been about two years now. They are fairly inexpensive if you don't buy them from the dealer and easy to change.
Checked fuel pressure - 65 psi. It is supposed to be between 55-65 psi. So fuel pressure is good.
Checked Throttle Position Sensor - good and working properly.
Coming to conclusion that car computer is bad. Will tow it to dealer in couple days and let them do the troubleshooting.
It has 2 computer boxes under the center dash. One made of plastic mounted close to firewall. Another one is metal, mounted lower. Which one is the engine control module?

My Chilton manual shows that it should be in the 35-65 range, so you're on the high side. I kinda wonder if the fuel injectorz could be clogged.
I stumbled across something about checking the fuel flow rate just the other day, even if the fuel pressure tests okay.
I can tell you from experience of owning a 2001 for 1 year now that they have multiple problems. Recently mine was doing the same thing. I swapped out the relay for fuel injection and it started right up. But then it started doing this more often. I finally got a P0320 code which indicated bad crank position sensor or cam position sensor. replaced the crank sensor and thought it was fixed but turned out only temporary. replaced the cam sensor and thought if was fixed again. after driving around for an hour or two it stopped running again but would start right up. found that if I took the ground cable off for a minute it would clear the problem and run great for awhile. if you go look at all the TSB's for a 2001 ford escape you will find 156, several related to the escape stalling, not starting, etc. I would try just for the heck of it swapping that relay. two times mine would crank but that was all. I swapped the relay for the rear window defroster with the fuel injection relay and it started right away. I also bought an Actron code reader from autozone for $39, that has helped a lot. since replacing those two sensors it has run pretty good but still has an issue which I think is related to the recall on the PCM. that problem will cause the escape to stop running at speeds under 45 when decelerating. nice
