white chalky stuff...

hey
ive got some white chalky stuff...around my freeze plugs.
it does not disolve in water or engine degreaser
anyone know what it is ??

is it a possibility that its a dirt dobber's nest?
if their brass, could it be corrosion?
just guessin here, iwork on alot of farm equipment and thats just some things ive seen before, my buddies 302 had dirt dobbers in some holes on the heads, just guessin

Probably it's a weeping frost plug and corrosion is forming there or coming out there. Judging by the look of the oil filter, this engine has not had the best maintenance. When was the last time the coolant was changed and flushed?

was going to say something about the filter too.

I think if it ant leaking don't weary some might have glued the plugs in

i just got this engine its from a 69 cougar...
its a 351 windsor
going in my 85 f150

unholey holes freeze plugs

hey
you guy where right...of the three freeze plugs iv done 2 i pushed easily thru with a screwdriver! some nasty rusty crud in there too could scoop it out with a spoon!
2 of the three havent the best casting job their not good looking like the first onelooks like some one used jb weld or some thing on it.
used a wire brush in a drill to
clean up but still some crap left!



ps anyone know what that tube / rod ? is inside the middle freeze plug hole is...

Just get a small piece of sand paper and clean up the remaining rust in those frost plug holes by hand. Use a bit of sealer like Permatex on the new frost plugs.

The rods that often are found in the water jackets either loose or still attached were put in to hold the sand "cores" when pouring the molten iron to form the casting at the foundry. They are benign.

Definatly flush that block good before installing, and with something besides just water. I can see a clogged radiator in your future.
Edit: Also I believe there is another plug behind the flywheel. Someone may verify. Better to check now.
