Well, I've got my radiator out of my truck to take to my friends shop and have it serviced and repaired. Also got me a new thermostat. What is the proper way to flush the engine? My truck is a 78 with a 460. Thank you in advance.
One way you can do this is by sticking a garden hose into the upper radiator hose inlet (make sure you remove the thermostat first) and turn your hose on and run it untill the water is clear... I wouldn't use any chemicals in your coolant system because they can cause leaks.. I would just run some water through the engine block untill it runs clear that should work just fine
To be sure you got the block clean you need to remove at least the rear freeze plugs. I've seen blocks so packed in the rear with crap it was a real pain just to get the freeze plug out of there.
Thanks mark a.. I just crawled out from under my truck to check on the freeze plug accessibility after reading your post and I found a leaking rear freeze plug. Nice. These things look kinda tough to get to. I don't feel good about just replacing the one. I'd like to replace all of them. Can this be done in the truck or do I need to pull the engine? I've seen brass plugs as well, should I go with those?
