Last week I was driving my truck and it quickly developed a pretty loud tick. I drove it about 10 miles home after that. After listening to the engine with a stethoscope I decided it was in the valvetrain. The engine has about 5000 miles on it. When I first pulled the valve covers I spun the oil pump & had oil up to all my rockers. Upon inspection, I noticed that the rocker on the #4 exhaust valve was very loose (approx. 0.080” clearance). I pulled the lifter and noticed that the surface that runs on the cam was not as smooth as it should be. I pulled the adjacent lifter and found that the #4 exhaust lifter is about 0.150” shorter than the adjacent one. I can’t see the cam lobes very well but just feeling with my finger on the base circle I can’t feel any difference between the one #4 exhaust & the #4 intake lobes. Do you think I just got a bad lifter or is there likely a more serious problem here? Should I replace all the lifters? Should I pull the cam or just try to look at it the best I can from the top of the engine? In advice would be greatly appreciated.
I used Rotella with a break in additive for break in, & have been using Rotella since then. I thought that would keep me from having this problem, but I guess not. I'll try to see what the cam lobes look like & post an update this afternoon.
I would think so man. Yeah sometimes i wonder about the guys working at the big box parts stores cause they seem to not know what they are talking about alot of the time
I took some valve lift measurements today. While my measurements weren't exact, I kept coming up with 0.070"-0.100" shy of the spec on that valve with a solid lifter in. On the adjacent intake valve I measured w/in 0.010" of the spec. Looks like the cam is coming out.
Pulled the cam today. That one lobe is worn down about 0.060". All the other lobes are perfect. I don't think it was a bad (i.e. soft) camshaft or the damage would have been more widespread. I'm blaming this one on the lifters (Summit brand).
