Paint Pintstriping Device Help

I am not sure if this is the correct forum, but...I am thinking of eventually pintriping my truck. I have no experience, but am willing to learn and practice as long as it takes to get good. My buddy has a mechanical striper made by Sharp that he says I can have as long as I help him when after I do my own. I have seen the Bugler version demo'd at car shows but not the Sharp. Has anybody ever used one of these devices and what were the results? Stripe jobs around NorCal are running about $200. Any help would be appreciated. Jag

The local library has books on striping, so yours should too (or can request them from another branch). Those should give you some tips and ideas. I'd be inclined to buy a standard striping brush and some 1-Shot and just practice. Stripe freehand on stuff that's lying around: old appliances, spare body parts, abandoned or "project" vehicles, slow-moving farm animals and people.

Wow, me, with a brush? I never even considered the possibity. Are you saying that you have tried both and that the brush is about the same level of difficulty as the roll-on device? Or, are saying that the roll-on devices do not work well? Jag

I haven't tried either, I just got a book out of the library. But I figure it's worth trying... a Mack brush is less than $20. Scrap enamel paint from the basement or recycling depot should be OK for practicing. Still, if your friend already has the Sharp striper, give it a try.

But, if you want a work of art on your truck right now, like some of the crazy examples in the books, then $200 is money well spent.

If you want real advice, there's bound to be some striping discussion on the HAMB. And here's a good list of topics: http://www.sketchkult.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1110
