I am thinking of eventually pintriping my truck. I have no experience, but am willing to learn and practice as long as it takes to get good. My buddy has a mechanical striper made by Sharp that he says I can have as long as I help him when after I do my own. I have seen the Bugler version demo'd at car shows but not the Sharp. Has anybody ever used one of these devices and what were the results? Stripe jobs around NorCal are running about $200. Any help would be appreciated. Jag
Dude, that Bugler thing is awesome.....at the carshows. Its like when you go to the fair and they tell you how easy it is to shoot the basketball into the tiny hoop. Then the carnie does it, because that's all he does every day all day long. Then you do it and your friends laugh at you because the carnie schooled you. That's how the Bugler is. A relative bought me one after we saw it at a car show. Its easy to make swirls on a piece of paper, and the magnet things make it look easy to make a straight line. But try to use it on your car/truck and wait till your friends laugh at you. Those guys make it easier than it looks. If you're just going to do straight lines and do not want to use vinyl, there's a striping stencil you can get called Striper by Finesse Pinstriping that works awesome. You lay it on, brush on your color, and peel it off. Looks proffesional. Good luck.
Thanks Brian, I know that you are probably right. I have bought things at trade shows that worked great but when I went to use them at home, it was a different story! My buddy has lent his to me to try out. I will try it for a while and probably give up when reality sets in. What did you do with your unit? Jag
Take a look at these guys who make templates for your stripes as mentioned above. A Cougar guy called them and asked if they could make a set in Cougar dimensions and they said no problem. I saw the finished product and they look great. You lay down the tape and then apply the paint yourself...
Trust me pinstriping is a pain in the *** ive been practicing for a few months now i have a mack 00 brush.. i barely can keep a nice strait even line on paper now trying to do it on painted metal and on glass is even more of a pain in the ***.... this is one of them things your not gona be able to pick up a brush and lay down things like von dutch! If i were you i would go to a car show and find someone that does pinstriping and hire him to do it for you..
Yea, unfortunately you're right. I tried it last week on flat paper with the borrowed striper and it was tough to edge around curved lines. I think that the stright lines would be doable if I had the available long magnet strip with the goove in it. The striping unit has a guide that you can attach that follows the groove. But for the curves, I was not even close. Jag
Yeah something i noticed trying out the bugler at the NSRA show in york is you still have to twirl it like a pinstriping brush to get the curvature correct. It takes a long time to get how much twirl/turn on the brushes at what time to get the line you want.
there is no substitute for pinstriping by hand. I have lots of friends that are stripers some of them very old school and there is nothing cooler than watching them put their artistic touch on something to make it really stand out. do yourself a favor and pay someone reputable to do it. it adds SOUL to your truck!!
