anyone got a compression tester I could borrow anywher in NW oregon/SW washington?
I realy need to get compression numbers on my truck and it seems the cheap compresion testors from HF won't work
I wish I could drop $200 on a good kit right now but I either need to borrow one or find one for around $50 fittind for the older VW diesels would be helpfull too
there are a few auto parts places like autozone that have a tool rental setup. go in, pay for the tool, when you bring it back you get 100% of your money back. i would check that out bud.
yeah but the parts stores round here are afraid of ticking off the shops they supply by making it easier for folks not to go to them for simple crap, not one parts store in town will even lend a code reader
I could go on for a bit but I really am kinda bitter about it
Check with one of the major chain stores not the local style parts shop. The chain stores really don't care about local mechanics and most of them rent tools.
I know Autozone doe not have diesel compression testers, don't even have the regular compression testers on the loaner program. Harbor Freight has them for around $50 or less generally. They do cover anything with a glow plug for sure.
If you already have the necessary other stuff just laying around your garage, I would get the harbour freight kit.
I just happened to have solder supplies, simple propane torch, and an old glowplug.
I took my time by cutting off the valve on the supposed adaptor for our trucks. I then cut an old glowplug accordingly and soldered things together so it would thread in without bottoming out, etc. compared to an old glowplug depth.
It worked for me, did 2 runs and got the same results. I kept the tool in the drawer for later use just in case as well.
Now as far as actual readings compared to a "professional" gage I cannot vouch for, but my one experience showed everything looked alright.
According to the case, it is supposed to do them. Good to know they are not exactly as presented. I had kicked around the idea of getting one, but hadn't really needed one.
Description:
For GM 4.3L and 5.7L plus Navistar 6.9L and 7.3L diesel engines. Replacement valve core is M3545A4. Must be used in conjunction with MT33C Compression Gauge and M3569 or M3570 Quick Couplers.
Well, mine from HF just showed up, it's a U.S. General #93644, It states in the parts list a M10x1 adapter is included, It's supposed to be adapter number 17 for the Ford/Navistar 6.9L - 7.3L up to 1994 ... I must be blind and dumb or they are!
There is an adapter that has the correct threads, however it is way to long to work.
The quick disconnect is unusual, finding adapters to fit is unlikely, however there is an 1/8" male pipe thread adapter with schrader, so adapting should be easy.
