I need to know if anyone else has had this problem and how do I solve it! I have installed a new mechanical fuel pump and fuel line in my truck. The fuel line connection is leaking. I have tried both the old fuel line and a new fuel line, however it seems that the flanged end is not properly seating in the fuel pump. Has anyone else encountered this problem and how did you fix it? Can I use braided line or can I have a fitting put on a rubber line?
Have had the truck in the garage for 4 weeks and this is the last thing that I need fixed to get it back on the road. HELP!!!
I would take off the line and see if the threads are good on the fitting and the pump. If everything looks ok, make sure the flared part of the fuel line isn't damaged.. If that looks ok, slide the nut back slightly and make sure the flared piece sits in the pump outlet hole than hold it there and slide on the line and tighten while you are pusing on the line... Make sure it is pretty tight, but be careful not to round off the nut and to make sure the line is seated right you can wiggle the line and it shouldn't have any free play.... It also helps if you take your power steering pump and bracket off that way you can access the pump from above... It makes life sooo much easier
I assume you're talking about the outlet (carburetor) side of the fuel pump.
When you installed it, did you hold the outlet fitting (the part that the line screws into) with a wrench while you tightened the fuel line fitting? If you didn't, it's possible that the fitting has cracked where it is attached to the pump. If you did hold it with a wrench while tightening did you use regular wrenches or flare nut wrenches to tighten the line? If you used flare nut wrenches and are sure the fitting is tight, installed a new line and it still leaks, about the only thing it could be is the pump itself is bad.
Its possible, altough unlikely, that the seat for the flare fitting has a nick in it or is damaged in some manner keeping the fitting from sealing.
It's not advisable to use a rubber hose from the fuel pump to the carb., to easy to break and cause a fire.
