Was in my shop the other day tearing down my rear end in my 82 and i cam across a chip in one of the teeth so i decided to stop right there and figure out whats next so whats the best gears to put in it for the 300 to pull like a champ. gas milage isn't really cared for at the moment. so if you could help be gladly appreciated thanks!
Pretty sure its stock, Its a auto trans but im also thinking bout doing the same thing to my 84 and thats a manual 4 speed. , but its ganna be pulling alot so i guess 4.10s?
How much are you going to be pulling? How fast do you need to go? How fast does the truck need to go when you're not pulling?
The higher the gear ratio, the better at pulling it'll be, but the more speed you'll lose. If you'll never be taking it over 35mph (only around town tow vehicle), might as well put 5.83s in it and have it pull over houses. But if you do highway, some 4.10s would keep it more reasonable (still lacking top end though.) 3.55s are a great combination of daily driver/towing vehicle.
The intended overall use will dictate your best gearing.
well i do do want it to perform alright on the Highway (65-70) but i also want it do pull like hell. so i guess 4.10s? thanks for the Suggestion abandoned
I have 31x10.5's and a 4.11 gear ratio with an automtic transmission. I can get 7,000 lbs moving without an issue. Unloaded on the highway, however, sucks. I have no top end power.
1st gear is a real beast. When the truck wakes up and I pin the skinny pedal I can fishtail.
My best highway mileage is 16 mpg @ 60 mph babied, on all flat ground.
Damn bill thats worst than my 89 with a 460 out a Lincoln Continental 9 inch lift and 38.5s lol that gets 12 on a good day. but what the hell i guess the satisfaction of pullin more than my good buddys silverado will be an enjoyment, just not when i pull up to the pump hahaha
