My 2004 F 450 will run thru the column, up and down, the linkage on the side of the tranny moves accoardingly, but it will not engage in any gear, just happened out of the blue. No proir problems with anything, no slippage etc. pulled a skidsteer to my shop, turned the truck off, restarted it in the a.m. won't move, any one had this problem and a possible remedy.
The remedy is usually pull the trans out and rebuild it. There's a very slight chance that the linkage disconnected inside the trans, but that's rare. Most likely something mechanical broke and it's toast.
Ah, same thing has happened in my dads f350. There is several things that i have read that could be the problem, such as a mechanical diode. i cant remember all the things that could be wrong, but it all leads to a rebuild.

I thought I was having transmission issues due to this whining noise when i pressed the throttle. I was told i needed to rebuild my tanny. Im glad i took it to Ford instead of this transmission shop because it was a pully.
