So I lost all forward gear in my 96 150 4x4 auto. Not sure what trans is in it. I know its an over drive tranny though. It wasn't slipping prior however I had noticed a hard shift between 2nd and 3rd. Drove it the other night and it drove fine though the clunk had gotten a little harsher (my dad was using it earlier in the day so I don't know if it was something he did or not) parked it and the next day forward wouldn't engage. Reverse is just a good as its ever been. Fluid was low so I added it until it was withing the hash marks but still nothing. Unless I'm over looking something the trans needs to either be rebuilt or replaced correct? My problem is I can't really swing the $1500 to $2000 for a rebuild right now, however I have found a few used ones in the $200-$350 range and have a buddy that can help me install it. So when looking for a trans what years will work? Its a 5.0 4x4.
Thanks,
Andy
andy you are probably looking at an E40D in your truck now. if you get another e40d for the truck make sure that it is a 1995 or newer. There were problems with these trannies in the earlier 90's that ford made modifications for later in 94 or 95. You might ask around at the local parts store... if you find the right guy he might be able to steer you to someone that will do a rebuild for you in their garage over the weekend. There are plenty of guys out there that need the extra cash and do it in their spare time. I got my Zf 542 done for $300. Especially if you and a buddy can pull and reinstall it. I've asked around about my c6 and sounds like $300 for a rebuild on it too. If I were you I would price the rebuild kit and see if you could find someone to rebuild. might be a couple hundred more bucks but at least you know what you have then... Just like yours you never know when another used tranny will go out. I see rebuilding them as extra piece of mind... Especially since you don't know how hard the previous owner was on the tranny and if they did a lot of towing or hard driving... well you get the point...
Have you connected it to a code reader? They will do it free at any of the chain auto parts stores. I just bought a '95 in good shape for $1200 because the guy thought it needed a transmission, turned out to be the TPS. $30 part, truck runs great. Could be the MLPS ($60 to $90) or some other electronic part.
Right now I'm trying to get it through for about 2 months or so then plan on having it rebuilt. As much as I hate wasting money I need to get this done on one paycheck so that I can get back and forth to work (I work 45 mins away). Right now I need a quick relatively cheap fix.
As far as engine codes or Tps being the issue I don't think I would have lost all forward gear, typically it just has odd shift points am I correct?
I appreciate all the help everyone, what years will drop right in? I think I may have a lead on a 95 E4OD for $250 however its going to be a week before I have the cash so hopefully its still there.
I've found a few people to help me install it and there are a couple of trannys that I've found around. Will any E4OD from that body style and engine combo bolt up or only specific years?
It might be worthwhile to read my posts in 4r70w fluid change. No gurantees, but you sound like me. I cant just drop 2k right now, and I need the ride.
Mine, while not as dramatic, was doing the same thing with the hard shift to 3. After popping the pan, I can see why-Sludgy mess that could stick a valve easy, especially if it hasnt been run regularly or not changed, like mine
I dont have the valve body out yet (rain delay), but if you drop the pan you will know if something broke or not. The fliud and filter you should get anyway for either the current or new/old one. It set me back 60 bucks.

Any E40D from a 4.9L I6, 302 V8, or 351w V8 will have the same bell housing and will bolt up just fine. I am not a master at the new computer controlled E4OD's but I'm sure any small block ford E40D will fit. The 460 gas and 7.3L Diesel will NOT fit. different bell housings. also you will have to get a transmission from a 4x4 model like yours. You might want to try changing the fluid and filter and see what happens. If your fluid hasn't been changed in a long time the valves in the valve body will get sticky and won't allow the transmission to shift properly. Either way you'll have to spend the cash on new fluid and new filter once you get a different tranny anyhow. Also there were upgrades made to the later 95+ E40D trannies. 94 and down were prone to problems which were fixed by these ford upgrades in the later 95+ E40D's.... So if I were you I'd find a bronco, F-150, F-250 with a 4x4 E40D that is 1995+... Just my 2 cents...
Thanks for the help, I'm really in a bind here as I cant work on the truck where its at but need it towed to where I'm going to work on it. Ill only have a day or so to do it. The fluid looks cherry red, its a plow truck from an apartment complex and looking through the repair records that were there the fluid was changed 30k miles ago. I think what I'll do is pick up a trans, then try a fluid filter change in the one thats there and if that fails install the "new" trans with new fluid and filter. I figure I can always sell the other trans if the filter and fluid change work. I recently moved to an apartment that dosnt really have a usable driveway to work on. So different from having a house and driveway to be able to work on it. I figure if I need to remove the trans I'm going to do the rear main as well. Any other things I should do while I'm back there?
Before you go through this, one of the LIMP home symptoms can be reverse only. I am no expert, but I have been reading a LOT lately. Checking the codes, then just dropping the pan may save you a bunch of time and money or just tell you what you already think.
Best of luck. A driveway is no picnic either believe me
I just powerwashed the concrete pad that I have to work on so my glider will move better and not jam up on little gravel pieces... I would absolutly check the codes before pulling...
Other things to consider...
Front and rear diff fluid change
u-joints
transfer case fluid change
rear main
transfer case front and rear seals
front and rear seals on tranny new or old...
