Here's the deal, if your truck is going in for fresh paint, and your trim is NOT new and vibrant, leave the trim off, it will 100% detract from the truck. Beyond that, it's just preference. Personally, on a solid colored rig, I like the wheel well trim and just the upper trim in the dent. I don't think solid colored rigs look as good with the full upper and lower race track trim, I'd sooner go no trim at all than have upper and lower. Then the tutones, I prefer the full upper and lower race track trim, but as long as you have a break point for the color, I think that looks killer too...ie have the colors overlap as 1/4-3/8" pinstripes where the trim should be.
I have been debating this with my self for a while now. The cab I started with was a "Race Track" trimmed truck, and the donor body wasn not. I like the look of the race track trim and I spent some time finding all the missing/damaged pieces for my supercab truck as well as the tool box door. My truck is a solid color (or at least it will be, maybe), but with the race track trim I think they look better two tone.
I guess im still undecided!
Two tone Blue with white inside race track trim.... hmmm
personally i like the dentsides without the trim. i like the cleaner look.
some look good with the trim but in my opinion they are few and far between.
that being said mine currently has trim but hopefully when i am done the trim will be gone.
My truck has both sets of trim, I forget what you guys called it... "Racetrack"?
But yes, it has all the trim, all the way around and it's currently a two-tone truck. I'm still debating on colours as well. Maybe I should start another thread for colours. I think I will now because it all depends if I want it to be two-tone, a solid colour or what...
Thanks for the advice tho guys. I'm still leaning towards no trim and a solid colour. Just what though...
It's pretty much just personal preference and here's mine. I like them better with no trim. I felt really lucky to find a truck without any trim, it doesn't even have it on the drip rails or tail lights etc. Its a lot less work for me not having to fill holes. And I have seen rust develop around the trim holes so thats another plus. I actually thought about adding some to my truck but I'm not going to. I don't really care for the race track trim or the huge trim in the dent with the black in the center or the 4 inch tall trim across the very bottom of the body. Too me the race track trim reminds me of the 80-86 body. Take a look at a 79 with race track trim then look at the 80-86 body with the odd indentions above each wheel, looks similar.
The trim I do think looks good woud be trim on drip rails, the thin trim above each wheel. And there is some trim that goes in the dent thats a lot thinner and doesn't have the black down the middle. My uncle has a 78 Ranger like that. I think that looks good too but I'm still not adding any to mine. Anyone know which smaller dent trim I'm talking about and is it a special trim package or what?
I will give you a few different looks of trim on the same truck.....
My truck with racetrack trim:
With no trim:
And finally with just upper trim after new paint:
Personally I like the two tone with racetrack trim best but I couldnt decide on a middle color for my truck when it was painted and it was cheaper to just do one color and buy only upper trim
Ronzi, second time I've seent that truck on here. Very nice. What color is that? My truck was dark jade metallic but is getting painted deep jewel green pearl metallic right now. Some if it is already sprayed and it looks pretty similar to your truck.
I dont like the trim with the rubber rail in the middle buti Like the the thinner all metal trim and I'm using it on my truck
Thats what I think as well. I don't plan on adding trim to mine but I have somewhat considered going with the trim you are refering to. Any idea what that stuff is called or is a trim package or what?
my super cab is a custom and it has the racetrack trim, and I have a reg. cab parts truck that is also a custom and has the thin stuff. I think when people talk about "racetrack trim" that is the thinner stuff, available in both upper and lower.
It seems like the stuff with the rubber rub rails came on the 78 and 79 trucks, but like I said, my 78 custom reg cab has the thinner style stuff.
