Have an '01 F350 V10 3.73 and just installed a Scanguage so I can monitor my tranny temp (among other temps) while towing.
Just wondering what sort of range of temps I should expect to see? Noodling around town (not towing) it was at about 135-140.
Also, anyone know at what temp the dash idiot light comes on and starts sending shivers down your spine....this is the reason for the guage as I don't ever want to get close to that temp.
It can safely go to 220°F all day long. You can go to 250°F for no more than 1/2 hour. I don't know of a dash light, but the OD light will flash at 275°F.
With the 3.73 diff I will not be towing in OD (just on the edge of wanting to drop out of OD at the MAX 60MPH I drive at while towing), so will the OD light still flash at me if I neglect to watch my guage and it gets to the 275?
What are you towing weight wise, in what terrain? I would consider regearing the truck. The 3.73s are horrible gears in the 5.4l and 6.8l SDs, I know I have 3.73s in mine. Your empty trans temp numbers in the summertime are normal, I get similar. I have never seen over 190 degrees trans temps but I don't tow close the GCWR of the truck.
I'm towing about 8000lbs, and I am thinking about going to 4.30's - this trip with some mountain passes will be the determining factor.
The truck is a 2WD, so it could be a relatively painless process.
4R100. Ain't a torqushift, that's for dam sure. ZF6 was the only other option, but I don't think he'd be talking about the trans wanting to drop a gear if he was the one punching the clutch.

If you have around stock size tire 4.30s or even 4.56s will work well for you. I would also consider looking into an SCT tuner with some tunes from 5 Star. The 5 Star tow tunes make a healthy difference in performance, plus they will improve the shift and TQ lockup strategies greatly helping to reduce trans temps.
I don't think you'll have any issues with 8k lbs though.
