I don't drive my f250 too often so i get kinda lazy about fixing some of the smaller issues.
The truck starts great when cold. However after driving for a while it has been getting a little slow to start. I have not gotten the battery tested yet, but its nearly brand new. So is the wiring at the battery, I replaced it with new cable and audio grade terminals.
I'm sure the wiring at the starter is original as is the starter itself.
Basically on a FI 302, is the starter the typical culprit or bad grounds? Are there any other relays, switches, or wiring that I should know about that can cause slow cranking when hot?
So far I've got:
-Check battery
-check starter
-check wiring
Still getting to know this truck as well as the rest of my fleet.
most likely it is your wiring as you already suspect. i was having this problem for a little while so i replaced all the wires and cleaned the ground. later on found out my timing was advanced too far.
You homemade your battery cable it sounds like. What size wire did you use?
The only thing left is the negative battery cable and the starter itself. The timing could be a problem if the proper procedure hasn't been used to set it.
I used 2ga cable. Same cable I wired my race-car with. The ground to the engine block is still original. I will pull the starter to check it and replace that cable too.
I just didn't know how long these starters last. My other car has 240K, also from the 80's and the starter has never even been apart.
By the way the truck has 122K on the clock. Also a mechanic went through the whole thing looking for the stalling problem that ended up being a bad fuel pump. I was told he checked the timing, ecu and all that jazz. Not sure I trust his work, so I should go over it myself as well. (I didn't pay for that repair)
I can't say how long the starter *should* last, but i've never replaced it on my truck, and I've had it for over 12 years/150K miles. The starter drive is starting to give me minor problems, though.
Weak connections, dirty/corroded cables, or timing too fast can all cause hard starting when hot. Left like this too long, and the starter can be damaged.
