I recently drive 120 miles to purchase an X from online searching only to be very, very disappointed. I learned a hard lesson by not asking enough questions. When I arrived, the undercarriage looked like someone sprayed it with saltwater for the last 8 years. Deal breaker to say the least, especially since the tires were flaking off also. Many other probs but those were the big ones.
I've found another worth looking into. I now know about the OASIS reports and some other points to look for along with what year I want from this forum, Thank you!!
The one I've found is 400 miles away and I have a trade. I plan on extensive communication with pics and video from the dealer before any signing.
Any tips for negotiation on a long distance purchase??
I won't mind driving to get it, but will flip if it's not what I'm expecting especially for a 7 hour drive.

I would make sure that the person you are buying from gives you a written garuntee stating what they will give you for your trade. And no matter what you do be ready and willing to walk away...even if you like the truck.
Make your long drive work for you...put him on the spot to make the deal...because you will not come back, don't let him put you in a spot to make the deal "because" you made a long drive. If the dealer knows up from that you will not return but you are ready to deal now, he may also be more willing to work wtih you.
You can even try making him meet you part way...this puts him into the pot more than you and can often make him more eager to make the deal.
And lastly...make sure that the paperwork is CORRECT before you leave...if purchasing out of state make sure that you know the car purchasing and tax laws for both states. The last thing you would want is for both states to charge you tax on the purchase.
I would rather stay local so I could "work" the deal better, but I haven't found anything here, Erie Pa.
We have a state inspection, tie rods, tires, glass, emissions, brakes, rotors and hoses etc. I've found quite a few in Ohio with in 200miles, but I fear they won't pass our inspection because Ohio doesn't have one. Then I have a large out of pocket expense right after the purchase.
I can't take it home for a day and pull tires etc. I suppose the dealer could put it on the lift for me at arrival??
The one thing I have going for me is time. I really don't need the X right now.
Once the new baby comes in Nov I would like to have one.
I need a vehicle to seat our 3 soon to be 4 kids and a few friends for family days and the hauling capacity for gathering fire wood. I really like the room the X offers and I can keep the mileage down because of my job.
I drove from NC to PA to pick up mine. I wanted to know if it had a clean title, any flaws, and that it ran good or someone was going to pay me for my time and costs. I had no clue what to look for in a diesel, but I maked sure that I was going to pay my price and I would be there the next day to pick it up. The dealer asked me to pay a deposit and I said no because if I was driving that far, I didn't want to worry about my deposit and how the dealer was going to pay me for my time. I let the dealer know that I had been looking for a very long time for a X and this was how the deal was going to happen if he wanted to sell it, as he was selling it for a friend. Just go into the deal as you're the boss and if it doesn't work, you'll find your X somewhere else and it wasn't meant to be. Good luck.
I found one near a friend of mine who will go and check it out for me.

Should I let the plug thing get in my way of the purchase??
Waiting on oasis and car fax
leather with brand new tires, Salesman says all options work, unclear on warranty right now.
they are starting at $14900
What would be a fair meeting place in $?
My experiance was such that I waited almost 18 months to replace my destroyed Ex until I found the right one, right price at a local dealer with a good reputation. You bring up an excellent point about your safety inspection in your state. Dont take chances. There is too much title-washing and garbage going on with these highly desirable vehicles. As for the price. I'm not surprised. In Wisconsin (where I live) these things are demanding a premium price. $14K for a clean Limited gasser is not too far off. Add $6K or more for diesel. In the end, the only control you have is patience. The right one will come.
Oh, as for the plugs popping. My first gasser did it at 140K miles. It runs on nine and find a place that gives you the confidence they will fix it right and it will be fine. I hit 165K and still going strong. Even after it was blown away by a 24 wheeled crane. I got $3K in trade!
Well if the dealer takes my offer I will be make the journey to IL to pick up my X on friday.
Everything so far checks out just fine, (vehicle condition, car fax, oasis, multiple pics, 1 owner) fingers crossed I don't get any surprises when I get there!!
I hope you're not paying the asking price of $14900. Atleast come down $1000 and if he says no, tell him to call you when he does and then you'll come pick it up then. I had the salesman come down $3000, but I had to turn down about ten counter offers and guaranteed him that I would be there in the morning if he accepted my price. Stand firm.
Expecting a used car salesman to be honest with you is like expecting to see a train come down a dirt road. Just doesn't happen. Keep in mind that his job is to sell cars. If that means BSing then so be it.
I bought my first vehicle from a dealer and it was my ex limited in perf cond except ball joints for $8,500 but I got lucky because I knew it was on their lot for 2 months (South Dakota). There was just nothing bad on it to lie about but NEVER trust a dealer. They know the vehicle very well and they have nothing to lose by bending the truth. I would wait until another one pops up closer and never say you are bending over backwards just to see it. "Never let them see you sweat". They did say they didn't have it very long (the no sweat principle in reverse)
