looking at buying a newly rebuilt 390. hardened seats, 74' 360 heads, fe 528 intake and exhaust {eglin} cam supposed to be 1 above stock, alum. intake 4b,new fuel pump, flathead pistons, supposed to be out of a 64' thunderbird. he says it is a police intercepter, BUT, it has hydraulic lifters. i thought all the p. intercepters had solid lifters. am i right, or did some p.int. have hydraulic lifters? and, how can i know for sure? he says he will open it up and show me whatever i want. $1350.00 probably a reg. 390 right?
The 390 PIs had hydraulic lifters and not available in the T-Bird. The best engine in a 64 T-Bird was the same as the basic engine but had a 3 2bbl carb setup on it.
I had alway heard the only difference between the 390 PI and the T bird engine was that the PI had and alum intake.
Back in the day the manufacturers had a lot of optional but production mods for all of the government cars. Usually just a small bump in the compression ratio and a bit more cam as well as a bigger carburetor.
In 1959 Ford had a kit for a dealer install of the 430 Mercury Maurauder Tri-Power engine in the smaller Fords for various departments. The kit included the entire driveline and all of the suspension. I was only involved in one that was for a Border Patrol or FBI car.
Back then you could buy almost anything from the manufacturers if you knew the right people to get the order through and had the money.
