Tranny spewing fluid

99 F250 tranny spews fluid when 4x4 in deep sand. ok otherwise.
not sure if tranny going bad or cooler blocked. any one with same experience? how to diagnose?

surprised when fluid spews on exhaust and catches fire. happened several times.

The '99s don't have enough transmission cooling. They didn't have a transmission cooler in the radiator. If you changed the radiator for one with a transmission cooler and changed the air to oil cooler to a 6.0L cooler you probably would fix the problem.

i never found the specific place, but i'm pretty sure it's some kind of relief valve.
just not sure why it relieves on the exhaust which catches fire.

i think i'm going to make the suggested changes. did a little research so i think i know what to replace. just want to make sure i don't have any blocks.

There is no relief valve on the transmission.

so is the only place to leak out the filler tube? cause i never could locate where it leaked. only that it always spews on the exhaust and catches fire. only leaks with 4x4 in heavy sand. had truck in sand often well over 100K miles with never a problem before. never happens regular driving or towing.

There is a vent on top of the trans. If you get fluid coming out of here the trans was overfilled.

Can it overheat and then come out and not be over filled?

I've tested transmissions above 300°F and never had one eject fluid from the vent unless it was overfilled.
