so a while back i built my 300. put a cam in, dp intake new carb and assorted other goodies. while i put the new engine in, i completely got rid of everything computer ran, including the brain itself. well now im going to need to build an emmissions system for it cause i will be moving to an area where inspections are needed. my question is what year truck do i need to look at for non computer controlled epuipment? and i should only need an egr, air pump, cat, and the tubes to connect them correct?
80-83 Federal emmission trucks should have all the needed parts. You may be able to locate some stuff from a newer model though.
I'm guessing that you are going to have to remove the carb/intake at least, in order to make it pass. The aftermarket intake and carb will likely not pass the visual check in most areas that require emission testing.
im still good with the carb and intake, theyve got all the provisions needed for hookup/ that 50state legal stuff. i was thinkin 80-83 but wasnt sure. thanks.
If you have a "real" tech inspection on your truck and they know what they are looking at, there is no way it's going to pass without the original stuff back on the engine. You can't "go back" to a earlier non-computer setup, because that was not emissions compliant on your truck. Your sticker on the radiator probably says "EECIV" and it will have to have that on it.
That being said, most tech inspection people don't know what they are looking at. In my state, we don't have sniffer tests, and the rest is pretty much who the inspector is, and how picky he is. 50% of the time they did not lift the hood, and when they did, all they really looked at was the smog pump. It had to have a belt on it and "look" like it was hooked up. I ran non-smog aftermarket carbs and such, but I always hid them under a stock aircleaner. A nice chrome aircleaner is a dead giveaway.
So I am not sure I would go to a lot of trouble to change everything around. If you do have a stock aircleaner, it hides a lot. If it had a smog pump, make sure yo put one back on, and some of it's plumbing. If you are going to have a sniffer test, I bet with a little tuning, you can get your aftermarket setup to pass.
In some states they require the emissions to be for your year as equipped or newer. Keep that in mind. In VA they do have sniffer/dyno tests for non OBDII vehicles. Just in northern VA currently. Three counties I think.
