Just took my X into the garage for inspection and the mechanic informed me the X failed the emmission test. He stated there was no data on computer ask if i replaced battery, have any codes cleared recently or had a dead battery. The battery is 4 years old never had any codes cleared or even had a scanner hooked up to vehicle. he told me to drive it for a week then get in retested... Has everybody ever had this problem, X does sit alot I might put 100 miles on a month.. Any suggestions would be great 03 V8...

'03 V8 what? There were three V8 engines available that year, one was gas and two were diesel.
Not sure about PA, but in MD when my excursion goes in for emissions testing they do not plug it in to the computer. It gets the sniffer (tailpipe) test because of the GVW. I was a little worried about it because when I scanned it some of the readiness monitors showed "incomplete" - which is normal.
Mine is a V10, so it might be different for the 5.4?
Any more details on the reason he failed it? Does PA have state run testing facilities?
Mad- because you only put about 100 miles a month on your X the Vehicles PCM, baiscally engine computer doesnt have time to run whats called Drive Cycles for the different emission systems. It is a pain but just takes time. try callign the dealer and asking them about it. Here in Cali, we are very stringent on this however there are a few ways we are given to cirumvent the issue such as yours.
If I scan my ex it will show that the readiness monitor for the oxygen sensor and the oxygen sensor heater is "not ready" (or incomplete) because my excursion doesn't have a downstream O2 sensor. That's what I'm wondering - if he's seeing this and saying it's failed - nothing is wrong - this is normal.
Not sure how PA handles it, but like I said, MD considers it a heavy duty truck (GVW >8500) and doesn't even plug it in to the computer.
First thing I would do is find out how the PA emissions works for your excursion. Next find out exactly why your mechanic is saying it fails.
Thats exactly correct. In PA, anything with the gvw over 8500, it gets the 2 speed idle test. it will NEVER say that all the peramiters are ready. I had to go through the same thing when I first bought my X. My mechanic told me it failed also. I have a V10. I had to tell him what to do. I have my emissions and inspection license for cars and heavy trucks. I cant inspect my own because I work for a mass transit authority and we only do semi-annual inspections. Plus, we cant work on our own vehicles at work. Your mechanic should know that if he has has his emissions license and not using another mechanics license and name just to get the job done..
NY state is the same as MD, scared me when I was failed the first time like you were. Came back 8 days later and failed again. I had bought my EX in Michigan and was beginning to wonder if I had gotten screwed and bought a lemon. The mechanic called the Ford dealer and they told him about the 8500 GVW exemption. Good Luck
i didn`t get x inspected this week, garage to busy, but i did talk to ford dealer he informed me that in Pa GVW in has to over 9,000 for an exemption. I thought it was 8,500 mine is rated at 8,900. I guess i`l do some more research. ????
The one you spoke to at the dealership is an IDIOT. You dont want an emissions exempt sticker. Your truck will never say that its ready.. Go speak to someone that knows what they are talking about. DIFFERENT DEALER. since its over 8500 it gets the 2 speed idle test. I think trucks 9000 and over is exempt from emissions all together. Plus it depends on the weight class of the truck. I dont know about other states, but in PA, the excursion is not a truck. It is registered as class 1, "station wagon". thats why you wont get the emissions exempt catagory. There are parts of PA that do not require emissions sticker at all. I know I kinda rambled on but......
So if you don't drive your vehicle enough for it to store some data you fail emissions?
Na, on most vehicles, If you disonnect or replace the battery, and then right away go for an emissions test, it will most likely fail because it has to relearn the drive cycles and the O2 sensors and other things have to go through their cycles a couple of times before they are "ready".
I'm in Pa and never had an issue, but also drive under 5K miles a year which means my Ex is emission exempt here so it don't matter if the check engine is on ( at least that what the dealer told me ).
