OK this is my question, I have an F150 with a carbed 300 and Im thinking of swaping out the c4 to an oad. I can get a free tranny out of a 88 Mustang 5.0 will this tranny work. Also other than the tv cable and driveshaft what else would i need. Thanks for the help.
Not sure if the flex plates are different between the AOD and C4. The biggest issue you
will probably have is getting the TV cable hooked up and adjusted properly. If the AOD
was ever offered behind a carbed 300 that would be what you need for the TV hookup.
If it wasn't ever offered with a carbed 300 you will have to fabricated some brackets
and a correct way to hook to the carb.

The AOD does require a different flexplate than a C6, not 100% sure about C4, but I believe the C4/C6 use the same plate.
The AOD was offered behind the carbed 300, but I don't know if it was ever offered on a non-feedback carb 300. I think the AOD started being offered in 83 behind the I6. If so, then that would be about the only way for it have a non-feedback system utilizing the AOD.
The AOD isn't very strong, in stock form. They can be beefed up, but this gets pricey.
Getting the TV rod/cable adjusted correctly is also critical, or that can get rather pricey too......
yep the tv cable ist one of my biggest concerns. i've been told i can use the same flex plate from the mustang im going to try it see what it does. i'll try to loadsome pics of how ive installed the tv cable it might help somebody. thanks guys!
Do not use the 302 (5.0) flexplate. The 300 is internally balanced, while the 302 is externally balanced. Using a 302 flexplate will make the engine out of balance, which will wipe out the engine bearings pretty quickly.
Get a flexplate for a 300/AOD combo. They aren't too pricey to buy new.
You should move the tv cable concern up to top after the flex plate. If the tv hookup
and adjustment isn't correct you can FRY the AOD real quick. It is cricical to get the
tv hookup and adjustment right on an AOD.
Well i havent had any luck with the tv cable. and since i need this truck to be ready as soon as posible, here another question does anybody know if there would be any problem havin my C4 running with higher gear ratio currently its 3.08:1 i dont plan to pull or haul anything to heavy since i already have a 82 F150 with 351w and c6. this would be my daily driver and want to make cruise friendly. thanks for your help
Driven in a sane manner, a C4 would prolly live longer than an AOD, regardless of the gear ratio.
My C6 has lived many years sandwiched between a 300 and a 2.75 gear, turning 31/10.50 tires, and frequently dragging a trailer with a car on it.

Being all mechanical, it doesn't make a difference if the AOD came behind a feedback or non-feedback carburetor. I converted my own feedback carburetor and computer on my 1985 to a conventional (Autolite 4100) carburetor and Duraspark II ignition 3 years ago and I haven't had a problem with the AOD.
If you have changed out your stock carburetor for a Holley or Edelbrock carb, however, you will need to also buy a "throttle valve corrector" bracket to keep the throttle arm geometry correct to run the AOD. Summit sells these plus a nice stainless-steel TV cable from Lokar.
MAKE SURE YOUR THROTTLE VALVE (TV) ROD OR CABLE IS ADJUSTED CORRECTLY! I would highly recommend having a transmission shop make this critical adjustment.
here is a write up I did on my AOD conversion/installation. Granted this is on a '76 with a 289 but the theory is the same and I reference the TV cable I use.
i put i carbed 351w behind my aod. it kills the power... wasnt aware of the nessecary throttle cable adjustments. burt third gear out of it. the linkage never stays in place. just not a great combination. my motor makes 400 horsepower and there might be 300 getting to the tires and maybe half the torque its suppose to make. believe me its NOT worth the hassel if i could go back i would have never done it. just do your research and talk to local shops. and if you do put the aod in do NOT drive it to a shop to make the adjustments, have it towed. driving it around block without the proper adj. will burn third up cause its a direct drive gear. only one ever made in this era im told. good luck and let me know if you need any help i might be able to kinda help walk you through it.
Windsor-f150 et al, yes, you have to get the cable adjusted correctly BEFORE you drive the vehicle. My previous post had a link in it to my write up but seems to have disappeared so I updated my original post and have included the link here:
I love the AOD. Around town I use D (3rd gear) but on the highway I use OD (4th gear) and it cruises right on down the road. 70 -75 mph on the interstate all day long.
Just got back from an 800+ miles trip last week without any problem or hiccups at all.
