Cool cowl vent

Mine on the 49 is different from the pic too, it does'nt have the channel under the cover either!

I went and filled and smoothed the cowl vent. I had mean feelings toward the way it performed in stock configuration.....

Well this is where the poor quality of Ford documentation yields it's ugly head.

I looked up the Cowel Vent assembly in a different manual and this is what I found.

First, there is only one part number for the cover from 48-52 (7C 8102133-A) which supposedly negates a change between years. Again I think the covers were modified during the production run to incorporate improvements - like being able to install and remove the cover by just loosening the bolts (instead of having to remove them completely) and sliding the cover to the side. Or, different plants (Windsor in Canada for example) may have had a different design using the tooling from auto vents or something - whatever!

But also here's another tweek! This manual shows the four bolts as being #10 - 32 x 3/8!!!!! And I'm sure that those are the correct ones shown in the picture in this manual.

When I measured mine last night they were #8s go figure.

So, kiwi, if you are ordering bolts and nuts, order both #8 -32 x 1/2 and #10 -32s x 3/8 and both 8-32 and 10-32 nuts!

Inconsistant and non standard production and inconsistent and non standard documentation!

Nothings ever as simple as it seems! I think its very possible that the variation is due to New Zealand and Austrialia Ford dealers importing there trucks etc from Canada as we are RH drive over here! Thanks for your help,Julie can i ask one more thing of you please,on your cowl vent what measurement (depth) is the channel at the centre line of the cab (mine is 5/8") and i would hope yours is the same?
PS take a look at my company web site www.hawkesbayengineer.co.nz theres more recent pic's etc of my 56 and other restoraion work i have done for customers Kind regards to all, Kiwi.

Well it was a little difficult to measure for two reasons. First it's on the truck and hard to get anything in there, but also , if you look back at the picture, you'll notice that the channel top is not flat but rather a little rounded/pulled up in the center.

At the edge of the channel, from the surface of the vent lid down to the outside surface of the channel on the corner was 3/8 inch. In the middle of the channel is 1/2 inch.

Because the cover is slightly convex (taller in the center), I would imagine in the center we would get the extra 1/8 inch to make it 5/8. You can see that curvature in my pic. The top edge of the channel is curved and the bottom - mating surface to the frame - is flat.
