M5R2 noise concern
M5R2 noise concern
Hey all, hoping someone can shed light on this one...I have the mazda 5 speed trans in my truck (300I6), and recently, I get a sort of clicking/ticking noise starting around 50mph, all the way up to and past 70. I'm worried it my be the trans, could it just be low on fluid? Also, how do I check the fluid on that trans, and is it bad if it is over filled? All help much appreciated!
Hi,
As to your clicking noise, I can't say, although it's possible it may be the synchronizers. But, yes, quite likely, if you haven't checked the fluid level, it may very well be low. Plug is on the driver's side, towards the rear of trans. And, you probably won't believe this, but you put ATF in it -NOT gear oil. Basically, this a cheaply made trans, but if you pamper it, you can get quite a few miles out of it. Add some Lucas trans treatment to it, this will help it tremendously. Got one with 298,000+ miles on it. A little whiny and loose, but she keeps on rolling. Let us know.

So I checked the fluid level, I found a site that said to pull the "fill" plug and put in fluid until it comes out that plug. Well, when I pulled that plug, there was a lot more fluid pouring out (not the drain but the fill plug). I pulled off the top plate, the syncros look in alright shape, the 1-2 prolly needs replaced, but I'll deal with that later. I checked the clutch area, nothing looks out of place, but the noise continues. Is it possible a bearing in the tailshaft is going bad? Can you get replacements for those bearings?
