guys lately I've been looking on craigslist and I've found some zf5 transmissions and idi owners parting out their trucks, I was hoping some of you could just post on all the parts I will need, I am planning on doing this myself if possible, I feel confident as long as I take my time and feel this could teach me alot aswell, I've been doing a ton of reading on oilburners and I'm aware of needing a zf5 from a diesel because the bellhousings are different and I don't want to drill any holes, I'll end up putting a new clutch in I still don't understand this dual and single mass flywheel business and why when the trucks in neutral owners will hear a gravel noise Now I had a zf6 and my transmission never made any noise only problem I had was sometimes reverse gave me a hard time, another question is can I use a 2wd zf5 and my xfer case will bolt right up? this will be the biggest project I ever done and hope to have it by winter time any tips/tricks/info appreciated
if I already hac the e4od I'd spend my money on upgrading it rather than a full swap to a zf5 cause the tiny economy gain you might make will take a long time to pay for itself
this may sound funny but I hate automatic transmissions, I miss shifting with my powerstroke so much, everytime I hop in my truck I miss grabbing the shifter and having the control, but is what your saying a e4od would out perform the zf5?

I feel exactly the same way you do. Planning on the same exact swap here in the near future. Ill be watchin this thread closely. It shouldnt be too hard. Gonna need the tranny, the pedals, the hydraulic assy. and possibly a different steering column.
the E40D equipped trucks are rated for higher towing capacity than the ZF5, yes.
with a locking converter, and OD ratio being pretty much equal, there's nothing to say about fuel economy differences.
it used to be sticks did better.but that was yesteryear, the days of the c6 (3 speed/no over and no locking converters.)
the E40D can be fun to drive with a shift kit.i didnt drive mine without it,so i dunno what it was like.mushy and dull im sure.
but there's no joy in driving something you just dont like.happy converting. im just glad my knee knocker days are behind me lol.im not missing the old stick shifts at all.
No you cannot use a 2wd ZF with a Married Transfer case ... You must have a 4wd ZF off a Diesel.
Remember the F450 2wd drive has a 4wd ZF, it uses the TC mounts for E-Brake.
Some of the things you'll need are:
A donor truck of the same wheel base,
Drive Lines front & rear.
Clutch Slave and Master.
Rear Cross Member and mounts.
Brake/Clutch hangar assembly.
Floor Hump for the Manual. (or cut yours)
It is easier to just have the donor nearby so you can grab as needed.
I too love a stick shift, just wish folks aould stop snatching up the 4x4 zf5's at prices far above my budget so need to encourage you folks with the E4OD to stick with them

Well since you're in a rough spot, I would be happy to oblige!
Fuel economy was never a problem for me and once I got the bugs worked out of my E4OD its a prefect match for what I need. I do enjoy driving stick shift in the diesel ranger and more recently my electric car but for long haul driving I don't think I would enjoy my truck as much. One thing I noticed in a ZF5 equipped truck is just how heavy the clutch is. A single mass flywheel swap helps but it still pretty heavy compared to the lighter vehicles I've driven. I've also heard from a few guys that U joints can last longer when behind an automatic because the converter obsorbs a lot of the torque pulses slambed out by the diesel (anyone here care to knock that theory down? I have no idea....)
If there was a 6 speed transmission available at the time I did my swap I probably would have been tempted though. But since there in reality isn't an easy option for that, I still don't regret my decision to go with the E4OD instead of a ZF5 or ZF6 if I was really nuts.
One quick note is the E4OD does have a wider overdrive ratio than the ZF5 - not sure about the ZF6 but that transmission is basically not really an option without access to a machine shop.
ive got a 4spd and transfercase, both yours for $250 ive got everything you need to do the swap as well, minus the master cylinder/slave cylinder hose. cut that thing when i removed the cab from the chassis

I would be very very interested, what type of transmission is that though I thought zf5 was five speed counting Low gear?
