Re doing siding applying tyvek question

Hi all,
Can't seem to find an answer on how to seal under window sills. do you just use the very expensive Tyvek tape, leave it alone, staple only? Any advice appreciated.

We use tuck tape when we do it. Probably similar to the expensive Tyvek tape.

We use a couple of different type of tapes. We use dupont straight flash and tuck it under the window flange when we really need it to stick, and pella tape when the sheating is easier to stick to foil faced foam, osb, plywood. The butyl in the staight flash will leach into the substrate over time and the adheasion will get stronger over time. When we set a new window we use Flex Wrap it allows you to protect the sill and drain any moisture that may leak in the window to get back outside the wall with out causing damage.

Good old fashioned caulking is a good idea too. Fill any large voids with backer rod or minimal expanding foam first, then caulk things in. Use the tape over that for a belt and suspenders approach.

Are you replacing windows or just redoing the siding around them? And what type of windows are you going around, and if you are not replacing windows now, will you be doing so in future? I have been working in the glass trade for over 15 yrs and have seen and learned a few things that can and will make your life easier in the long run.

I will wait for a respnse to my questions before getting into deatails, but for the most part yes use the better tape and tape below the windows. Saving a few $ now to latter having to redo things is not a cost saving down the road. Roll of tape $6 or so, redo in 2-3 yrs, labour and materials to redo things, fix rot. You can see the benefits of doing things right the first time.

Thanks for all the responses. Wallz, the windows are not and will not be replaced. They are vinyl sash in wood frames, were here, don't leak and work fine. So it seems that taping under the window sill to the bottom of the sill? is the way to go? BTW Tyvek tape is around $12 a roll at the big orange store.

Ok, I got ya. The materials I don't pay for, they go on account so I just pick them up. It is very popular right now to trim the windows before siding, so you have a 3.5" border around them, so if they ever get replaced there is less work involved coz the siding stays put. There are some nice composite materials out now, like a full plastic that is contoured like wood but will not rot. Kinda like the composite decking material, and holds paint well, or just left alone adds the wide white trim around.

Wallz, I do have to replace some trim boards and have seen Azek trim material. Looks nice, is ok for ground contact, etc. Think I'll use that. So just tape up under the window sill and apply siding over and caulk any tiny(measure twice, cut once) gaps. Thanks for the advice.

Yep, the azek is what we use. Yep, tape, and make sure you have a good seal on the tape. Many a time there is not good contact, and if you have to trim some of the tyvek back from around the window area so you have some good contact don't hesitate. We even go as far as using 3pcs of drip cap when we trim the windows. One on very top, one above window, below trim, and one at the very bottom below trim pc. Some clear silicone in the corner joints should be okay, just don't go over board and use too much either. If you use the trim around the windows use a good caulking, window to trim, and trim to j mold. A good exterior latex, in the color that you are going to paint the trim in and you should be good for years to come.
