Capping a Brick Chimney

I need to chisel the cap off my chimney and replace it. What should I use? Someone said to use white portland cement, someone else said mortar mix, and suggested I mix Thompson water seal with it. We get temperatures here from -5F to 105F Should I use expansion material around the liner crock or just cement right up to it?

im a bricklayer from minnesota and we always use a mortar mix. we always just cement right up to the flu. you can get pre mixed like spec mix at the lumber yard and just add water we use that all the time.

How about coating the cap after it has set with UGL drylock?

I use to be a sheetmetal worker and we'd build a cap of aluminum or sheet metal and cap it off that way. Sometime's we'd paint it to match or just paint it black and they looked real good.

A few times I took several off after they had been there for 20 or 30 years and they never appeared to be too weathered to cause a problem.
I am assuming the chimney is no longer in use and you are capping it to keep out bugs, birds, and the weather?

Mortar mix is fine. Clean it up, wet the old surface real good before you start putting on the new mortar. After you're done I would cover it up with a piece of poly to slow down the curing process and keep it moist. Make sure the chimney is not in use though. Then you can waterproof after it's cured if you want. Drylock, Thompsons,.........

The cap seals the space between the flue and the outer brick wall. He still wants to use the chimney..

Make sure to check the first few courses of brick. Usually if the cap is bad there will be a few loose bricks, too. Now's the time to remorter or tuckpoint if needed.

Thanks a lot guys, will pick-up materials. The brick joints are in good shape, just some cracks in the old mortar cap and they were silicon caulked last fall. Have some burlap bags around here I can use to keep it damp plus I'll put a tarp over it. We still use the chimney.
