I think I may be having a high oil problem in my 78 2wd w/400.
It was rebuilt and bored .030 over about 15 years ago, and I just recently put in a new oil pump among other things (old pump siezed and caused the dizzy gear to snap). I'm running Rotella 15w40, which I know is thick oil, but before I replaced the pump I was running it and oil pressure seemed to be fine.
When I start it up in the mornings, it runs to the high end of the guage. It takes about 10 minutes of driving for the guage to drop and it only drops down a little bit. Drive it more and it will sometimes drop down to midway on the guage, and will rise and fall, but never drops below mid guage. I can shut it off, start it back up a litle later and sometimes it will read real high, and sometimes it will read mid guage.
The guages are out of an 89 Van, but all other guages work fine and are accurate (as accurate as can be I guess, but not out of the ordinary).
No knocking, doesn't burn oil, but leaks some. Also has a new oil pressure sending unit.
My money says you're just not used to a good psi reading. That being said, the dash gauges are nothing more than dummy gauges, if you really wanna know what psi your oil is running at, hook up a real gauge to it. I've got a good 400 that starts out at 70psi cold and then settles in at 32psi hot idle...and it's basically a stock rebuild.
Glad to hear that, thank you. You're probably right. Just out of curiosity, is there any way to tell high oil pressure by the sound of the motor?
My logic is, if the pressure is too high, its blocked somewhere (say, the oil filter), which would mean not enough oil is getting to the top end, and the lifters or rockers would knock. Is that logical?
that is not logical, Because most(if I remember right) the oil pressure sender is at the top, rear of the block, witch is the farthest from the oil pump, so if there is good pressure there, the rest of the motor has good pressure.. My 351M has 75-80 psi at startup, and goes down to 25ish when warm... only bad that can happen from too much oil pressure, is leaky seals..
