Intermittent power loss

Hello,

I have a 2001 F350 7.3 the truck will at random times loose power and almost shut down. A while back I had an issue with the uvch plugs and changed that out. Truck ran fine till I got some dirty fuel from a diesel tank at my friends farm. I did the hutch mod cleaned the tank and now have a frame mounted screw on filter before the pump. I cleaned the fuel bowl and changed the filter. Fuel pressure stays at 59psi and drops to 56psi wot. The truck is tuned with an edge programmer. After these mods the truck ran awesome for over 2000 miles. Now it has the above stated problem. I have fuel and hpop guages along with egt and boost. During the problem egts will increase rapidly and it seems like it is starving for fuel. Hpop guage reads 3300psi or above during wot and shows good pressure during these mishaps. I have auto Enginuity and I get a different reading at wot of only 2600 psi. The hpop guage is tapped into the icp sensor per instructions and has been installed this way for a while with no issues. The tune has been on the truck for over 40000 miles. The only thing that I can come up with is it will occasionally throw a p1211 under wot or pulling my Gooseneck Dump Trailer when loaded. However it acts up sometimes and doesn't throw the code. Sometimes you can shut it off and start it back up and it's fine other times it will last for the whole day. My only guess is low pressure from the hpop but I don't reflect this from my guage only on AE at wot. Wouldnt a bad pump act up all the time? Am I correct to think it is just the ipr?

Thanks guys

This may well be a contributing factor to the High EGT and so forth. However, the Edge is a very nice system monitor for our Trucks.

1. P1211 - "ICP Higher / Lower than Desired" (7.3):

We all know that this code is commonly caused by "Hot Chips" that are demanding more Injection Control Pressure (ICP) than the High Pressure Oil Pump can deliver. For what it's worth, these are the exact parameters that trigger this code:

PRIOR TO BEGINNING THE TROUBLESHOOTING PROCESS RETURN YOU’RE PROGRAMMING TO STOCK AND/OR REMOVE OR DISABLE ANY CHIP.

ICP 410psi Higher than Desired for 7 Seconds

ICP 280psi Lower than Desired for 7 Seconds

2. This code can also be caused by LEGITIMATE HIGH PRESSURE OIL

SYSTEM ISSUES. Below is a list of some of the causes:

a. Failed or Sticking IPR (Injection Pressure Regulator)

b. Failed or Weak HPOP (High Pressure Oil Pump) Any Leak in High Pressure Oil System (O-ring, stuck injector, etc.) Low Fuel Pressure (Rare) P1280 / P1281 / P1283 - (7.3L)

c. These codes are all "electrical" in nature. Common causes are shorts between the Red and White IPR wires or between the Red IPR wire and ground. These can also sometimes indicate a PCM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lastly, try recording AE with a 0-75 MPH Run:

DIAGNOSTIC DATA TEST RUN: 0-75 MPH USING AUTOENGINUITY SCANTOOL

Record the Session (NOTE: name should be memorable and in a directory located easily)

Because the PCM adjusts injector output based on oil temperature information received from the Engine Oil Temperature sensor and turbo boost information received from the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor, and the Barometric pressure (BARO) sensor. These corrections are necessary to meet emissions requirements and to optimize power.

Ensure these sensor inputs are within specification. Otherwise, the test data will be skewed. Outputs of these sensors are displayed EOT (temperature), MAP (boost pressure), BARO (pressure), and BARO V (volts). MGP shows boost.

BARO: [4.6 volts/14.7] this should be within .5 PSIG of the MAP psi at sea level, decreasing as altitude increases. (Volts)/100 kPa (14.5 psi).

Manifold Absolute Pressure (ATM) [Min 0.00 Max 50.0]

Engine Oil Temperature Input (EOT) (*F) [Min 0.00 - Max 250.00]

Engine RPM (RPM) [Min 0.0 - Max 3,500]

Exhaust Back Pressure (PSIG) [Min 0.00 - Max 60.00]

IAT: [3.897volts@32°F, 3.09@68°F, 1.72@122°F]

Injector Control Pressure (PSIG) [Min 0.00 - Max 3,500.00]

Injector Control Pressure (Duty Cycle) (%) [Min 0.00 - Max 100.00]

Mass Fuel Desired MFDES: (mg) [Min 0.00 - Max 100.0]

Fuel Injector Pulse Width (mS) Scale: 10.0 [Min 0.00 - Max 0.50]

Transmission Fluid Temperature - Volts (V) [Min 0.00 - Max 5.00]

Transmission Fluid Temperature - (*F) [Min 0.00 - Max 230*F] #2001 and later MY

Vehicle Speed (MPH) [Min 0.0 - Max 100.0]

VFDES: Volume Fuel Desired (Cubic mm) [Record Displayed Value]

* Note Minimums and Maximum Values for each PID.

* From a Stop, on a safe level roadway, clear of obstructions, begin from a stop to 75 MPH with the AP going steadily to the floor. DO NOT allow the pedal from the floor until 75 MPH is reached.

* Program will record data as a CVS File where you specified the location.

* Open with MS Excel and convert to .XLSX and save.

* Build graph with ONE TIME TABLE and headers shortened to acronyms: i.e.: Engine Oil Temperature - EOT

* Select the chart area you wish to graph and select input and then chart.

Thanks Thomas that was a load of helpful info. Only had AE for a few weeks. This will be a great help putting all these parameters in. I have a zf 6 speed. Should I pick a mid gear and do a pull so the throttle isn't fluctuating from shifting?

Thanks
