the mileage vary s from 15 - 26mpg. rear leaf spring hangers and shackles rust. the slave cylinder in the m5od is a weak part and internal. the m5od tranny has rail plugs that fall out and the tranny runs out of fluid
Rangers and Explorers have the same drive trains. Many owners experience problems with the 4r55e/5r55e automatic transmissions.
See the thread that is currently running for a sampling of what goes on with them.

It may help to give us a little more info on the truck you're looking for...
Do you want he best mileage vehicle (4 cylinder, 2wd)
Do you want the most capable tow vehicle (4.0 L)
Do you want / need 4 WD??
IS an auto tranny or manual your preference??

I would look for a 2.3/2.5 4 cylinder. I think they would tow that boat but someone else would knpw that better than me. the I4 are dependable and get good mpg. most of them come with the 5 speed. . but you might find a v6 that is a good deal and those are good also, you can pick these all up cheap espically if you can fix them at all. There is a 93 xcab with a v6 with 109k on it in craiglsit(Boston) for $600 they will take less, it is not getting fuel ,worst case it needs a pump $150. I see something like this about twice a month they are usually around $500. You could spend more and get one that might need any work, but eventually they will all need something.
whats the chances of getting one with a bad tranny?
It's always a possibility. I believe the 4.0's have the same problematic tranny's as the Explorers. Not sure about the rest of them. But as with any used car try to find out if it was maintained properly and buy the newest / lowest mileage one you can afford.
I would think that a 2.3L four would suit your needs. Mine has been problem free for the 3 years I've owned it.
I bought a used 97 ranger with the 3.0L, 4x4, manual. Its been incredible, most reliable vehicle. I think Ford forgot to put cheap parts in them for future mechanic work. I've had mine over 7 years and besides normal PM all Ive had to do is change the power steering pump and front wheel bearings. The AC has never worked for me, the odometer stopped at 100,000 and the fuel gauge is bad but its taken a beating and a half from me and is still going strong at well over 200,000 miles. It gets 24 mpg on the highway and has plenty of power. I have friends with these pickups too, they've had great experiences with them too. I think they are the best bang for your buck as far as small pickups go.
