I give up

Excellent questions. I have posted on black tips before. I bought the truck new, no modifications. The tips have been black since day one. It regens EXACTLY at 660 miles everytime, I have heard others have the same report about black tips and regen cycles at the same mileage. I actually took it into the dealer and complained about black tips, they told me it was normal. I think black tips help it not plug up! Trust me the mileage is true, having said that, I thought it would be higher when I bought it. I came from a 97 cummins 12V. Now, I cannot complain.

Well, the Dodge's have their own problems...I saw one today (new) coming back from Denver that passed me doing at LEAST 90mph while I was cruising at 72ish. About a mile up the road we hit the grade heading into Westminster. It's a short grade, but he started blowing smoke. I figured he'd chipped it but he pulled over a mile or so later into the emergency lane, and I didn't see him anymore.

Good luck!!

Bet that Dodge had his engine shutdown or something if he was blowing smoke and stopping...

Are you getting 4mpg (facetiousness) in the winter and then it climbs in the summer? Tire pressure is a KILLER in these trucks. When was the last time the fuel filters were changed? Do you REGULARLY run a cetane booster with lubricity? Have you checked your air filter lately?

I'm not being a ********, but I have to ask since you own a DIESEL, and these things don't normally get worse mileage over the miles unless you're missing something.

Just asking as mine is increasing. All the way to 19.2mpg doing 70mph down to Denver today...It's downhill coming back too...somehow.

Edit: I will grant that the 19.2 is by the lie-o-meter, but it's usually pretty close...
I am religious about maintenance ...I keep receipts for everything including fuel logs.

I changed the oil every 5K and the fuel filters every 10k. I check the tires regular. and multiple times when I'm towing.

I've worked on every thing from helicopters, to diesel trucks, to my rock crawler, I have my own tools/welder etc and I can turn a wrench. and the 08 was my 3rd HD diesel truck. (plus a VW TDI)
I also read religiously and subscribed to both the tdr and power stroke registry.

the 08 was also the first truck i had that I didn't chip, I left the power train completely stock.

I also tried booster/cetane/changed fuel stations. nothing helped. I was prepared for poorer fuel mileage with the new emissions but it was getting worse with no other factors.

and no....i would not expect my mileage to drop ...it should get better. I'm not a 20 yo with my first truck that daddy bought me.

I now already have 2500 miles on the new dodge and towed my 98 quad cab home(bout 10,500#) the dodge got 11.2 towing that load at 70 mph.

my last unloaded tank running 75-80 all highway netted me 16.2 which is exceeding my goal of 15.

I know this is a ford site and am still a ford lover (still own my 72 Mach 1 with a 1990 FI gt motor/AOD trans) just upset with ford at this point. my truck in June of 2007 sticker-ed at 56k. and ford would not touch it for ANY MPG ISSUES. And this is with a great relationship with both the service writer and that dealership. I've bought 2 trucks and 3 cars from there over the last 10 years.

I had the same problem early on. the dpf is craked and letting soot by. it also screws with the sensors and takes longer for it to read that its full so you get extended mileage between regens.

maybe I should not have gotten it fixed.....

I believe that FORD was missing something...as you can see from my join date, low post count. I tend to read more than I speak.

The truck would also make oil occasionally

whats the build date is your truck? job #?

Mine was a job 1.

OK so I'm looking at buying the 2010 with 6.4L. What is the JOB 1, JOB 2 I see being written? I assume it is when Ford did a major desing change to the engine. Or is it to the truck as a whole? Does anyone know what "JOB #" they are with the 2010?

I'm also now very scared of getting the 6.7L.

I also agree with you on the 6.4 MPG issues. My friend just got a 6.4 2010 and is getting 11.1 MPG hand calc driving it mixed city and highway his is an auto. My new dodge is getting 15.6 mostly all city and have got a max out of it at 19.4 all highway. Im not a ford hater in the least bit cause i own 2 other fords. The 6.4 was just not what i was looking for since i wanted a standard couldnt find me a stanard either and i want itkept under warrenty since i have no time to work on it using the spartan ect.

the job # is when your truck is made. if there are any problems/programing issues they update the build.

I bought my 08 in June of 07. 1st year of the new body style/eng. there were some growing pains so if you bought a 08 truck in 08 it is probably a job2. 09 job 3 etc.

with the new emissions in the 2011 trucks and the urea tank I would not buy another job 1 truck . I would wait a year till the bugs are out and pick up a 2011 job 2.

the new fords are nice.

I went back to dodge because the 2010 has the new body style with a true crew cab like the ford ..but the eng/tranny combo has been in use since 08 and met the next tier of emissions in there 08 trucks....dodge had a few problems in there 08 trucks also the first year.

just wondering if the mileage you are getting is less then what was on the window sticker when you bought it?
the 4.10 and 35's are not helping you at all... just simple fact.
are you useing a c-tain booster? if not try one.
It seems to be an issue with fuel quality all over the place right now. we have had a bucnh of complaints about low milage right now.I dont mind paying the $3.00/gallon but damn give my a quaility product for the price.

Okay now I've done it! Sold my old truck 10 minutes ago and don't have the new one yet, guess I'm walking to work Monday. The GREAT (I think) thing is that the guy that bought it is the Service Manager of one of the biggest Ford dealers in ATL. He's been looking for a V10 to get traded but haven't seen any, hmmm I wonder if I should have sold it now, DOH!

Anyway I bent his ear for a half hour about 6.4 vs 6.7, he said not even a question, get the 6.7L. I asked about the DPF delete and a bypass for the DEF fluid, he said they already have it out there aftermarket, one of his techs already did it to his new 6.7L. He said what he's seen about the 6.7 is amazing, and he also said if Ford didn't hit this one out of the park then their truck market is dead. Ford has already been hurt by the 6,0 and now the 6.4.

Sooo I'm going to drop some coinage on the 6.7L 2011, maybe Monday. Payments once again, o-joy!

Look forward to your honest opinion once it is dirty. I am quite happy with mine for a few more, but one day I will be looking.

Every new truck to come out is so nice. Tested tough bla bla bla..don't believe what Ford or the sales manager say's.
Wait for the reports to come out from street level useage. After what I went thru with the Job 2 I have I won't get a new one again until it's got a full year on the market. Can't afford it.
