The transmission in my truck decided to kick the bucket the other day, so we are pulling it out for a rebuild. Anyhow, we were wondering why after removing the four nuts from the converter through the flex plate why the converter wont slide back into the tranny.
It only has a very little gap until you unbolt the trans from the engine and slide the trans back with the torque converter at the same time. When you drop the tranny the torque converter will come with it.
Alright then. We were going with previous experience with a 460, where the converter slides back about a half an inch or so after pulling the bolts out of the flex plate into the converter. We knew there would be some differences with the 6.9, so i suppose this is one of them. Is there anything else we should be aware of?
You'll notice when you get it out the torque converter will have a drain. It's a 7/16" socket and is located through a hole in the flexplate. I usually mark it with paint for the future ATF interval changes. When you reinstall make sure you KNOW the pump is engaged on the converter hub. This is done by turning it while pushing it in towards the tranny and you'll feel it align. Also pre-fill your torque converter with fresh ATF upon install.
