I have a 95 F350 4x4. The torque converter is making a loud rattling noise. The tranny still shifts fine. I wonder if I can just change the converter without rebuilding the tranny. I don't know why it's rattling. Any suggestions?
If I have to rebuild the transmission, I want to know if I can use the one I have from a 94 2-wheel drive without a transfer case. What do I have to do to hook the transfer case to the tranny?

are you sure its actually the tc that is causing the noise... the flex plate that attaches to the tc could have loosened up and be making to noise which would make more sense. Either that or the inspection cover is loose.

BigRyan makes a great point. Get under your truck and remove the inspection cover. It may just be some loose bolts.
Good ideas, guys, but I've already thought of that. I took the cover off, and I've already checked for loose bolts on the plate. That's not it. I put a hose (cut-off garden hose) up to the tc (so I can hear where the noise is coming from) and the noise is coming from inside. It sounds like bearings are rolling around on the inside. The noise is really loud until the converter locks-up, then it quits.
I already have a new 2-wheel drive transmission from a 94 F350 and I'm still needing to know how to hook up a transfer case to a 2-wheel drive transmission, which is really what I'm thinking i'm going to have to do, since I really can't afford to rebuild the tranny on the 4-wheel drive right now.

Hello
Are the 95 and 94 the same model and same engine size?
It would be great if that was the case, but I don't think so. If it was a broken flex plate, it should rattle all the time, but mine stops making the noise when the converter locks-up.
I can see where the tc bolts to the flex plate. If the flex plate is broken it would have to be broken between the crank shaft and the converter where the crank shaft bolts are and i won't know that till i pull the trans. Where were your fp's broken?
