I was wondering if anyone has ever had this problem or knows what to do:
I have a 2002 F-150XL 4.6L V8 with a manual 4X4 engagement "clutch"-(whatever you want to call it) and in order to engage 4x4 high I need to pull extremely hard, (almost to the point that I feel like I will break it). Once engaged it works fine.
My 2nd problem is that the **** (handle) is loose and I don't know what to do, does anyone know where I can get a replacement? Or how to fix my origional.
i have no experience with the manual engagement... does it help if you are rolling slightly? i am wondering if the teeeth are not engaging or if your saying the handle ddrags? I would pop it into neutral and at 1-2 mph see if it will engage easy ??
get under it, spray some liquid wrench (or the trusty fluid film) on the linkage. then work in the lubricant by going into 4hi, then 2hi, and over and over again.
as for the ****, use some gorilla glue. fill the **** with it, then press it back onto the shaft. wipe off what squirts off and wait until dry. OR you can wrap some electrical tape around the shaft and press the **** back on. thats how i had the manual tranny **** on my old 93.
on the electic unit, i switch into 4 x 4 low, then let it roll a few feet and it will engage... everything dont align when setting still sometimes.
ive used 4x4 alot lately. from 2 hi to 4 hi, it always goes in first try. dosent matter if its moving or sitting still, or if the trucks off. going into 4lo, the truck needs to be on, and in neutral in order for it to be able to engage.
trust me, its a dirty linkage. the more you use it, the easier it gets. when i first got my 97, i almost busted a vein trying to get it into 4hi. after i sprayed it a few times and worked it in, i can move it easily.
Before I do anything, is it alright if I shift on the fly or should I be in a complete stop while shifting.
(I have always thought manual engagement means that you can't shift on the fly)
