Hey all, I was driving down the highway today and all of the sudden my engine got very loud and I could hear every time one of the cylinders fired. When I got home I got a flash light out and I noticed a new hole in my exhaust manifold on the drivers side. It looks like the others have a bolt or some kind of a plug over this hole. The way the hole is on top of the manifold it can't be a bolt to hold it onto the block so I am wondering what it is for. Obviously what ever was there fell out. Is this something I can easily fix?
I believe that is where the air injection system hooked up. The PO probably disconnected the system and just had a plug or something in the hole. Do you have the smog pump/air injection system or does it look like it's been removed?

I don't thing I have any kind of a smog pump or air injection system. (Do you mean a turbo?) haha.
It looks like there is one of these holes over each exhaust port. They all have a little cap over them. Look at the one on the right of the hole.
What year/engine do you have? That could lead us to some answers.
No I don't mean a turbo. Air injection/smog control are the same thing. Air is injected into the exhaust by an air [smog] pump to thin out exhaust gases. It's usually done closer to the cat but I've seen some [not trucks] that inject air thru the exhaust manifolds.
Are you sure these are the original manifolds to the truck? Could be something a PO pulled off a different model engine and plugged them off because they weren't needed.

Since I bought this on CraigsList and the guy before me never had it long enough to have it in his name I have no idea of the history of this truck.

Yea thats exactly what it is, my 87 has the same manifolds. Even though has a carb and is non catalyst, it had a air pumps, two of them with tubes running along the valve covers injecting air into the manifolds at each cylinder.
Hopefully you can just screw in a new plug, hope the threads are still there for ya.

Ok, I will pull out one of the other plugs and take it to a hardware store to see if I can find something that will fit. Could I just weld the hole shut?
yes u can weld it shut if u have super powers and are able to weld cast iron....
ok sorry for the sarcasm no u cant weld it shut because its cast iron ;P plug it or get shorty headers or run to a junk yard and get a set of manifolds off an older 351 :P

Haha good point. I didn't even thing about it being cast iron.
I ended up going to a hardware store and getting a threaded cap that fit in there. So far it is working.
