I have had my Explorer in the shop twice now for the same problems. The 4x4 high/4x4 low lights will flash, and I will hear an intermitent squeaking noise coming from the front of the truck. First time at the shop, the mechanic took off the actuator motor and cleaned the contacts. This solved the problems for about a month. The second time in the shop, he replaced the "shift on the fly" switch on the dash. That worked for about two weeks. Now he's saying it is most likely a $400 module that controls all the electronics inside the vehicle. It controls the gauges, pwr. windows and locks, 4x4 system, radio, ect. We have yet to take it in to have him fix it. The squeaking noise seems to be getting worse. Is the trasfer case locking in intermitently and causing increased wear to the 4x4 components?
Just a thought... does the front end squeak (with the rig parked in the driveway turned off) and you rock the vehicle back and forth from side to side?
I ask because I had an annoying front end squeak that turn out to be the, I think it was called the front suspension arm bushing... anyway, I can take a picture and show ya. I found this out by crawling under the front and having a friend rock the vehicle side to side. I then drilled a small hole on the top of the arm bushing, inserted a zerc fitting, greased it up... and for the last many years and thousands of miles... no squeaking.
