I have a 2008 f150 5.4, all stock. I just had it a the dealer a couple times to find out about a gear type ratchetting noise and a rough idle. These are intermitent problems and the tech said he can't make the noise happen so he can't diagnos it. He also says it is likely a "normal noise" from the cam phaser. I think it is way to loud to be normal. Does anyone else have this issue?
yep, cam phasers cycling. Mine has been doing it for forever now and has 157,000 miles on it. It also rattles like a paint can upon cold startup... I guess I'll just drive her till she blows.

Is the idle only rough when it's warm
I had a similar issue and it was bad chain tensioners and the VCT solenoids on my 2008
Not sure if the rough idle is only when warm, but that is when i notice it. I ask the dealer to look into that. They think that if there are no codes nothing is wrong.
