trouble getting into reverse

I have just recently purchased a 1999 F-250 with the 7.3L powerstroke and automatic transmission, and I am having some issues getting into reverse. I have tried searching the forum, but have had no luck yet. Right now I have to rev up the motor while the gear selector is on the "R", after a few revs it will pop into reverse. After I have the motor up to operating temperature it goes in considerably easier. I changed the fluid out of the tranny and torque converter, and added some Lucas transmission conditioner, no luck yet. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

well it kind of sounds like a worn clutch piston seal, once they warm up a litttle they will hold the pressure, but probably wont last to much longer. i dont have to much experiance with the particular trans you have in your truck but hang in there mark will probably chime in soon. if it is a worn clutch pack seal time for an overhaul... if foward and reverse were both delayed after starting that would indicate the torque converter draing down when the truck is shut off, which would be a bad check valve.
these are some possabilities

Thanks for the help guys, I will take a look at it this weekend. How much of a pain is it to replace, I have been working on cars for over 10 years, but this is my first powerstroke, and automatic now that I think of it..

All you need to do is remove the trans, tear it down, and rebuild it. Get a GOOD manual before starting and a complete rebuild kit. Once it's out of the truck and opened up there is no reason not to completely rebuild it.

Hey guys, it took a little longer to get to the rebuild than I had wanted. I bought a good ATSG manual, and a complete rebuild kit like you said Mark. I am starting to rebuild it now, and have run across a part that isn't in the kit, and I can't seem to figure out where it would go in the tranny. It appears to be made of rubber, and is splined on the inside. I originally thought it went on the output shaft (the side where the output shaft hub and ring gear are on) , but the splines don't match up. The splines fit perfectly on the driveshaft splines, but I don't think that is where it goes. I would attach an image but I can't figure out how to..

Hmm, well that makes me feel better, You being the guru here on the forum. Well I should be putting the transmission back in the truck, and testing it out, at the end of the week. Wish me luck! Thanks for y'alls help!

well I think the piece in the picture was a plug for the tail shaft splines, the OD of the rubber thing was the perfect ID of the tail housing seal. So I figure it was something from the factory to keep the splines protected during transportation of the transmission, and they probably just shoved the driveshaft in and forgot about it.. On another note, the transmission is in, I have driven it for about 100 miles, and haven't had any issues thus far (knock on wood). It is however leaking some fluid, and I haven't had a chance to figure out from where yet. (only got it in yesterday.)

Oh yeah, they were extremely hard, and a few were had some small chunks missing. Well worth a rebuild. Oh and the snap ring for the overdrive piston return had worked its way loose. There is a small leak, and I think it is coming from the torque converter/ pump assembly...any ideas?

did the rebuild kit come with new rubber coated washers for the front pump? possable leak point. also if you disassembled the front pump did you use the band aligning clamp around the pump halves prior to tightening the bolts? could be if their not aligned up perfectly the large o ring on the pump od wont seal in the case bore well. maybe the front pump o ring or converter seal got nicked on reassembly, its to bad to have that problem after all that work, sounds like everything came out good
