So my 6.0 throws a small amount of black smoke when I slightly step on the gas. It will only do so for a second or two. From What I have read so far, black smoke out the exhaust seems to be normal when stomping on the pedal or for modded engines.
Is this normal for my situation where I am only slightly accelerating?
All my diesels have done that. The truck over fuels slightly on acceleration and does not have enough air right then and puffs a little black POOF, but once the truck is able to match the fuel to air miusually within 5-10 seconds) it stops puffing.
I say normal if its just a small puff.
I have not had it reflashed. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure what that means. Is that like a computer update from Ford or are you speaking of computer tweaking such as an SCT or bullydog?
I did take out the egr valve this weekend and it was pretty dirty. I did some reading and found that carb cleaner works best. It took the crud right off. I bought the new o-ring/gasket kit from ford but managed to re-use the existing parts.
Couple weeks ago I had the egr valve replaced, had the pcm, ficm, and tcm reflashed to the latest and it smokes on acceleration now. I get more smoke on start up and more smoke when I hit the throttle. Seems to run fine when the air catches up - BUT - it did NOT do this before the flashes and the new egr valve. I also took it to a dealer after the initial work because of the smoke, one that did not do the initial work, and they gave it a clean bill of health after diagnosis and drive testing. Any advice??
I have read on here that some people have noticed that the 6.0's have been a little smokier with the new flash - but that is not a scientific conclusion.
